Abel?

What does everyone think of this name? I’m having a little boy in April and am going through names, I already have a DS called Elijah, shortened today Eli sometimes. I’m not too bothered about the bible connotations, just wondered what people think of it?

If you aren't bothered by the biblical connotations, then Abel has a nice sound imo and is simple to say and spell. But while it has risen in popularity a lot in the last few years, it is still relatively uncommon so you (and he) might have to be prepared for the odd clever comment about fighting with his brother.

buttacups · 09/01/2021 17:56

Thank you, I’m not too bothered about the odd comment, especially because Abel is becoming more popular.

I'm not mad on it... don't think that is the bible story, I just don't like the sound. It's the end I'm not keen on. Too much like bull? Don't know.

Anyway, I do think it's a perfectly normal name though, and wouldn't raise and eyebrow.

Sort of similar, but imo nicer:

Ezekiel
Ezra
Josiah
Jonah
Abraham
Reuben

I love Elijah and Eli.

mamablondie33 · 09/01/2021 18:53

I love it. Though a couple from TOWIE just named their son Abel if that kind of thing bothers you? Assuming you’re in the UK?

I like it though. It has that ‘Biblical but fresh sounding’ quality.

WiseOwlRelaxing · 09/01/2021 18:55

I don't think Abel is ever going to be popular.

buttacups · 09/01/2021 18:59

@ParisJeTAime Thank you for the other suggestions, I prefer Abel to them all though!.

@mamablondie33 that doesn’t bother me! Thank you!

@WiseOwlRelaxing I think it’s on the rise, people said the same thing about Noah and now there’s loads of them. I don’t know if it’ll be popular but I think it’s used more now

I don't mind it. Does it go with your surname?

CrazyOldBagLady · 09/01/2021 20:11

I quite like it.

buttacups · 09/01/2021 20:17

Surname is one syllable and begins with S, I think it goes well

I like it.

daisypond · 09/01/2021 20:19

No. I don’t think you can avoid the Bible connotations. I think Old Testament boys’ names are dated now, no matter how much people dig out uncommon ones.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 09/01/2021 20:21

My friends little boy is called Abel. He's 6 now, my phone still automatically corrects his name to Anal, as does hers. Neither of us use the word Anal ever. So if you're ok with unnoticed autocorrects (that will sometimes be you're own) go for it Grin

sandandso · 09/01/2021 20:21

"I'm Abel". "Good, but are you willing?"

There might be a lot of that.

Thank you everyone!

@daisypond I’ve seen a lot of Old Testament boys names come back around at DS’s playgroup. But maybe that’s just my area!

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints that’s made me laugh😂, I think I can cope with it!

I’m not too bothered about the different jokes people might make, I have a really common name and people still found a way to make a joke out of it!.
