Thoughts?

With a fairly common 2 syllable surname (doesn’t begin with G!)

Middle name most likely Charlotte.

Not sure I like the inevitable ‘Gabby’ nn - any ideas of similar names OR other nns could encourage??

Ella is the other obvious nn. Gabs maybe, though arguably it's worse than Gabby.

If you feel really strongly against Gabby as a nn then I suggest you rethink the name entirely. It's such an obvious nn that with the best will in the world, and no matter how much correcting you do when Gabriella is a baby, it's almost guaranteed she will be called that by at least a few people. And don't forget that as children grow they own their own name, 13 year old Gabriella might WANT to be Gabby, and you can't stop or control it.

Gaia has a similar feel to me, strong, feminine, with a firm G at the start and A at the end

My niece Gabrielle goes by Bree. She’s 20! now and loves her name.

Strokethefurrywall · 09/01/2021 16:45

My niece goes by Gigi, since the day she was born, she was never Gabby!

Stunning name, definitely use it!

EverydayImJuggling · 09/01/2021 16:47

I love it. The little Gabriella I know is Gigi.

Lockdownlovernotfromliverpool · 09/01/2021 16:48

Our dpuppy is Gabriella - - goes by Gabby!!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/01/2021 16:50

Love it as I have one- I hate Ella so insisted on Gabby

VenusClapTrap · 09/01/2021 16:52

Nice name. The one I know has always used her full name, no shortening.

Cookies2523 · 09/01/2021 16:52

Bella?

ParisJeTAime · 09/01/2021 16:53

I like Gabriella. Prefer Gabrielle for some reason.

But, like you, I don't like Gabby and I don't like Ella / Ellie either. So, I probably wouldn't use, for that reason.

Brie might be another shortening.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/01/2021 17:31

Gabriella is very pretty - for some reason it always has an exotic, elegant sound to me.

As pp mention, I think Ella and Bree are nearly as common nn's as Gabby now - but you/ your daughter might have to use one of them from an early age, as otherwise people often instinctively shorten a longer name to the first syllable.

LittleRa · 09/01/2021 18:02

The Gabriella I know (7yo) gets called Bella sometimes.

CherryBlossomTree7 · 09/01/2021 18:17

Lovely name. I would say if she's not a Gabby, Ella would be the other go-to.

I would avoid though if you don't want her to be a Gabby. Her name will inevitably be shortened to Gabby by various people.

Midnightinrome · 09/01/2021 19:14

Thanks all - I think the suggestions of Gigi and Bree are lovely. I just love the full name so much it would be a shame to not use it because of not liking ‘Gabby’ but I suppose it’s not the worst nn!

I think you have to be ok with every potential shortening. You won't call her Gabby, so you don't have to love it, but you have to be ok with it, which it sounds like you are, so I'd go for it!

Gabriella Charlotte is a beautiful name.
