Hi everyone,

What do you all think of the name "Elise" and how would you pronounce it?

This is my daughters middle name...pronounced Elle eese...

EdgeOfACoin · 08/01/2021 14:29

I like it. Would pronounce it Eleese, with the emphasis on the second syllable and a soft 's' at the end (like the s in Lisa).

Peachbubble · 08/01/2021 16:18

The one I know pronounces it Eleeze.

Firebird83 · 08/01/2021 16:28

The one I know pronounced it ee-leez.

Silkiechickscat · 08/01/2021 16:44

Like it a lot and elle eeze like the French pronounciation.

Alwayswrongneverright · 08/01/2021 16:48

El-eese

mangothoughts · 08/01/2021 18:15

El-leeese with soft s not z.
It's a nice enough name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/01/2021 18:36

"EE - lease" (like when you lease a property) is how I'd pronounce it. It's a nice name, sounds very French but doesn't seem overused at the moment (despite the current popularity of some other El - names).

sandandso · 08/01/2021 18:38

Soft s like "lease". I don't have much of an opinion on it either way, it's fine.

Blackbelt · 08/01/2021 18:38

I think it’s lovely. I’d pronounce it the English way with a soft s. If you wanted it the French prononciation I would use a z.

sandandso · 08/01/2021 18:39

"ill-EES", I mean. Surprised people are getting an "ee" sound at the start.

user1494050295 · 08/01/2021 18:40

Beautiful name. Am biased. We pronounce it El use but her granny says ell leaze

Soulstirring · 08/01/2021 18:41

Lovely name. I’d use a soft ‘s’. El-eese

Chilldonaldchill · 08/01/2021 22:50

It's one of my irrational hate names but I pronounce it with a soft s at the end.

DramaAlpaca · 08/01/2021 23:12

Such a pretty, sophisticated name. I'd pronounce it with a short 'e' and a soft 's'.

This won't be popular on here at all, but I also like the spelling Elyse.

MercyBodle · 08/01/2021 23:26

Not a name I'm keen on, rather too soft and insubstantial for me, but it's a generally liked and accepted name. I'm okay with Elyse spelling too. Around me it seems to be pronounced El-eez. I'm in Australia.

maddsclairelouise · 09/01/2021 00:02

I really like the name Elise, was on my list for a time. I would pronounce it El-ece

madcow88 · 09/01/2021 00:10

My daughter is Ellice pronounced ELEESE I love it

CatandBaby · 09/01/2021 01:51

I didn't understand the love for this name at all. Reminds me of the brand Ellesse.

danascully96 · 09/01/2021 03:02

Elise is lovely! “ill-eece” is how I’d say it ❤️

Underused and elegant ☺️

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/01/2021 03:13

Elle eese is how I pronounce it. I know one, she often gets called Elsie as people misread it.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 09/01/2021 03:19

Pretty and classy.

El-ees

GeorgiaGirl52 · 09/01/2021 03:32

Long e, like the letter. E - lease

Oblomov20 · 09/01/2021 03:37

Love it. Would have chosen it if I'd had a girl.

themental · 09/01/2021 03:51

"ill-EES", I mean. Surprised people are getting an "ee" sound at the start.

That's how I say it too.

A warning to to the op though (from someone with experience)

You'll get El-eese, Al-eese, Eleeeeez, Elisa, Elsie, etc etc and your daughter will constantly be correcting people and spelling it on the phone 🙃 I gave my own daughters simple easy to spell and universally pronounced names for that reason!
