This is the latest name suggestion from my OH for our little boy due in May

What's your thoughts? I'm undecided

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
maddsclairelouise · 08/01/2021 00:29

My cousin is a Sonny! I really quite like it and actually think it is wearable into adulthood!

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 00:35

@FenEel

Not keen, it sounds like a "policeman telling off a kid" name "alright Sonny, let's be having you".
Yes this!

Ok as a nn but I would actually call him something else

covidaintacrime · 08/01/2021 00:42

Love it! Cheeky, fun and youthful. I think it would be great on a baby to adult honestly. There will always be nay-sayers!

Mumsn0t · 08/01/2021 03:20

The Sonny I know is on his early 20's now, knew him as a young child. It still suits him.

Re: it not suiting adults or even being humiliating to be called it as an adult, what about all those adult men called Sunil and often called Sunni/Sunny for short? I don't think they or anyone they know ever bats an eyelid.

MercyBodle · 08/01/2021 03:26

I don't like it at all. You can use if for a nickname though, and call him anything else.

joystir59 · 08/01/2021 04:05

Ok for an American gangster or Bollywood star

yourfaceisaforeignfood · 08/01/2021 04:21

I have never noticed Sonny Bill Williams looking especially ‘humiliated’ when being addressed by his name. And he’s a grown man and it seems to suit him perfectly well.

OP it’s not a name I would use but if you like it you absolutely should - A pp is right a name is a name and when it is used people just accept it as such.

Sonny
SmeleanorSmellstrop · 08/01/2021 06:56

I think cute but ime Mumsnet HATES it

EdgeOfACoin · 08/01/2021 08:13

It's very 1950s America.

I think it's a silly name on an adult.

Also, I think it's silly for anyone other than the child's parent to be addressing a boy as 'sonny'.

FluffyEggsontoast · 08/01/2021 08:15

Love Stanley and Toby

How about Sidney or Otis?

EssentialHummus · 08/01/2021 08:27

I think it depends on the surname. It can sound like an adjective.

Bearcub01 · 08/01/2021 12:40

I loved it and when we found out I was pregnant it was going to be Sonny! I soon got put off it because no one seemed to like it on here and had horrible opinions on it. I’ve now seen a few Sonny’s being born here recently so wouldn’t use it now anyway but if you like it, don’t let anyone put you off!

Babydust13 · 21/01/2021 08:47

Thanks everyone still undecided but I'm grateful for all your opinions

ploopypleepy · 21/01/2021 12:39

The is is my favourite boys name. I picture a happy little surfer type child

Luckyelephant1 · 21/01/2021 14:13

Its nice enough. Very popular nickname (spelt as Sunny) for quite a few North Indian names eg Sundeep. Its nicer for a baby/child but I think adults can pull it off too, certainly more so than names like Archie!

musicalfrog · 21/01/2021 14:18

Ooh yes Sonny from Grease!

How about Manny?

mummax3 · 21/01/2021 14:19

I love it! So lovely xx
( We have a Rane (rain) love different names xx

BigusBumus · 21/01/2021 14:26

Robin is a boys name. Robyn is the girls' variant.

I know 2 teenage Sonnys. Its ok, but there are sooooo much nicer names out there.

How about Tate, Asher or Rex?

PattyPan · 21/01/2021 14:29

I agree with pp who mentioned sonny Jim/policeman - it sounds like he’s being told off.

Babydust13 · 21/01/2021 16:54

To be fair I'm still not sold but my OH just really likes it his other suggestion was Axel which I think is far worse

We're still thinking? Typically we had 4 girls names we loved 😂

partyatthepalace · 21/01/2021 20:06

Fine as an nn but not as a full name - I know it’s popular at the moment but I think it’s weird. Agree Robin is better as a girls name - I like Robbie (Robert) though? Shame about Max. Reuben, Luke, Guy, Rory, Charlie, Billy, Frankie/Franklin.

LynetteScavo · 21/01/2021 20:10

I love it.
As I'm having no more children I've decided it's the perfect name for my grandchild GrinWink

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 20:10

I like it as a shortening for:

Jackson
Harrison
Grayson

How about:

Oscar
Hugo
Jasper
Leo

Babydust13 · 21/01/2021 20:30

@ParisJeTAime I really like Harrison but my OH doesn't

MaizeBlouse · 21/01/2021 20:33

I loved sonny but dp was less keen.

We also liked
Jesse
Ellis
Dexter
Cassius
Ralph
Frank
