Thoughts on Maxim?

Thinking of calling our little boy Maxim Grey, he would probably just go by Max.

What’s your thoughts on Maxim?

Wasn’t that a lads mag?

JorisBonson · 07/01/2021 08:44

Yep, 90s lads mag was my first thought.

Just Max is fine.

SoupDragon · 07/01/2021 08:44

I like Max but I really don't like Maxim. I'm not sure why.

Brunt0n · 07/01/2021 08:45

There’s a ‘Maximus’ at my daughters nursery. That’s better, if you must.

londongirl12 · 07/01/2021 08:46

Yes Maxim was a lads mag which is still online. I would just have Max

BertieBotts · 07/01/2021 08:47

We are abroad and one of DS1's nursery friends was Maxim. Every time I said it I heard "Maxine" and every time the lad was mentioned to any English family they also heard Maxine and assumed we were talking about a girl, if that would bother you.

Cactuslove · 07/01/2021 08:47

How about Maxwell?

Persipan · 07/01/2021 08:49

It makes me think of Maxim de Winter in Rebecca, which is not an altogether positive association given the character.

StillGoingToWork · 07/01/2021 08:51

Max is enough, Imho.

Twinkie01 · 07/01/2021 08:52

Max or Maximilian are nice.

Maxwell and Maxim not so pleasing to the ear IMO.

Twobrews · 07/01/2021 08:55

I love Max so it's a yes from me, also massive fan of The Prodigy.
There's a few children called Maxim/Maksym at my DC's schools.
Macsen the Welsh name is also quite popular in my area.

I also love Maxwell and Maxton

PawPawNoodle · 07/01/2021 08:56

I also thought of the titty mag. I suppose children won't know about that but will probably tell him his name was meant to be 'Maximum Grey' and that their parents did it wrong on the birth certificate.

Monkeytapper · 07/01/2021 09:09

Sounds like a sanitary towel

becca3210 · 07/01/2021 09:10

Would just stick with Max

formerbabe · 07/01/2021 09:14

I like Max

If I had a Max, it would be short for Maxwell I think.

Livsy · 07/01/2021 09:16

Max is better

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2021 11:02

Maxim De Winter from the classic novel Rebecca. Its an underused classic, with a gorgeous, sophisticated sound to me - I really love it. I don't think the lads magazine thing matters (people still use Elle for girls after all?) but if you are worried you could use traditional Maximilian on the BC.

ivegotaheadacheneedabaguette · 07/01/2021 11:08

Agree, I immediately thought of Maxim de Winter from Rebecca. Gorgeous name IMO

TheNanny23 · 07/01/2021 11:46

I immediately thought of the lads mag...

Have a grown friend called Maxwell, it really suits him. Intelligent, strong cheek bones, but also makes a cracking cup of tea.

Last time I checked Elle isn’t a nudey top shelf mag so it’s not really a fair comparison
ScaredOfDinosaurs · 07/01/2021 16:37

@Persipan me too - Rebecca is a classic book but a possible wife-killer isn't the best association, or the 90s lads' mag either!

OP why not go for Max, it is a nice name as it is.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2021 17:55

Yes but Elle obviously means "She", so still could seem a little odd as a given name, was my point. I guess for Maxim it depends on whether you are more likely to read a classic novel or a lads mag! Maxim is a well used name in other languages though (outside of those two English references) - so I find it very useable personally.

RMarieClaire · 07/01/2021 17:56

I love it! We considered for our boy but I had a beloved cat called Max and my boss's son is Max so it feels odd. Go for it!

Octoblockswim12345678swim · 07/01/2021 18:02

Maxim de Winter definitely murdered his wife and then had a creepy, rebound relationship with a woman much younger and poorer than him in some kind of strange power play. In MN terms, I think he would be classed as a narcissist at the very least.

Max is a better bet in my opinion.

Chilldonaldchill · 07/01/2021 21:54

I really like Maxim.
I didn't know about the 90s magazine but I'm a huge Rebecca fan and it wouldn't put me off.
I much prefer it to Maxwell or Maximilian - and to Max on its own.
