I've just noticed that the name Ivor appears to have been remarkably popular for midcentury architects.
Ivor Berresford
Ivor Shipley
Ivor Richards
Ivor Smith

Given the level of debate on here about name popularity/snobbery etc I thought it was rather interesting that one name could be so associated with a profession and period.

Perhaps Ivor was today's Arlo Smile

The name was popular for babies in the early 20th century.
It's an anglicised Welsh name.

The Welsh version is Ifor (IV-orr), and it's no much used, but it's nice.

This is probably the most famous one.

I really like Ivor, I hope more people start using it

sandandso · 08/01/2021 22:32

It makes me think knock knock jokes and the like, "Ivor Biggun" etc etc. Interesting about the architects though! There's also Ivor Novello (obv not an architect, but similar generation).

Lovely name

WiseOwlRelaxing · 08/01/2021 22:44

Ivor Cummins is coming up in my facebook feed constantly atm so that is who I think of!

I don't know. I think I like it. I don't dislike it.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 08/01/2021 22:45

I love Ivor. I was desperate to have this for DS but DH vetoed.... Gorgeous name.

GingerBeverage · 09/01/2021 11:23

Novello - of course, forgot about him.
I think it's a really strong classic name.

Ivor the engine...

Echobelly · 09/01/2021 11:26

It was my late grandfather's name - hoping if any of my kids have a son they might use it. It seemed fairly common among older Jewish men like my granddad for some reason.

Grin I always think of the lift/elevator company when people call their boys Otis.

Otis does make me think of lifts. Smile

Note that Ifor is pronounced YV-orr, Yv like in Yvette, orr like in abhorrent.

Lovely name.

I like Trefor too, TREV-orr.

Ivor and Trevor, not nearly as nice.
