Beatrix or Edith or something else?

The other day I asked about the names Alice and Emily (middle name Freda). I still love both but neither quite seem perfect. I've been thinking about more unusual names. I like traditional but not twee or cutesy names.

How about either Beatrix (Bea) or Edith (Edie)? Middle name would still be Freda.

Or any other suggestions at all?

Also like Hettie, Hattie and Etta but not a fan of Henrietta and also not a fan of using nicknames as names.

Edith is lovely - this was my DGM's name.
Not as common as Alice or Emily.

EdgeOfACoin · 06/01/2021 08:03

Do you like Harriet instead of Henrietta? You can get Hattie and Etta from Harriet quite easily, and Hettie as well, at a push.

Harriet Freda sounds quite nice.

busybee87 · 06/01/2021 08:08

I do love Harriet but it really doesn't flow with our surname sadly.

I like Edith

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 06/01/2021 08:27

Beatrix and Edith are both amazing names! Stronger and more quirky than Emily or Alice which are sweet but soft and almost a little dull but in a pretty way. I adore them both and their nicknames. I couldn't choose which one i like best!

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 06/01/2021 08:29

I also like Hattie and Hettie! But Beatrix and Edith are my favourites!

Labobo · 06/01/2021 08:30

I love Beatrix. Fantastic name. I love Edie but am less keen on Edith. I definitely wouldn't put Edith with Freda - two 'eed' sounds together are a bit clunky. But Beatrix Freda is stunning.

busybee87 · 06/01/2021 08:40

DH has just firmly vetoed Beatrix- pretty sad about it

Oh what a shame. Beatrix Freda is absolutely gorgeous. Edith Freda i a bit clunky with the repeated 'eed' sound but they would rarely be said together.

Freda is a lovely name in its own right. I think we have quite similar taste in names - how about:

Harriet
Martha
Iris

MercyBodle · 06/01/2021 09:17

What a shame about Beatrix. I love both Beatrix and Edith, and Bea and Edie.

Jelly4444 · 06/01/2021 09:24

How about Beatrice rather than Beatrix? Edith is lovely too.

busybee87 · 06/01/2021 11:07

He's not a fan of Beatrice either sadly! Feel a bit stuck now!

Love Edith, but my brain automatically went to Edie Freedie with the middle name. Don't let that put you off though, I have a tendency to ruin names for myself!

We have a very similar taste. Some of the names on my girls' list:

Iris
Sylvia
Harriet
Ada
Isabel
Olive
Elizabeth (Betty, Betsy)
Romillie

Chilldonaldchill · 06/01/2021 11:29

I love Beatrice and Edith though not such a fan of Beatrix.
I still wish I'd managed to persuade dh that we should call our dd Hester nn Hettie.

mistletoeandsigh · 06/01/2021 11:34

What's wrong with Frida / Freda as a first name? I love it.

bridgetreilly · 06/01/2021 11:47

Freda nn Edie?

I do love Edith but I wouldn't pair it with Freda. How about Enid?

Atrixie · 06/01/2021 11:49

Edith is hideous. One of the worst of the old lady names

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/01/2021 12:10

Not Edith - still too old lady (and Edie is quite trendy). Shame you cant use Beatrix.

I think you need a non- a ending name with middle name Freda. So Iris, Josephine, Ingrid, Sybil, Hazel, Astrid, Imogen, Maeve?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/01/2021 12:14

You could also possibly get the nn Etta from Juliet at a pinch (since the Spanish is Julietta)?

Aethelthryth · 06/01/2021 12:18

Love Beatrix and Edith

FluffyEggsontoast · 06/01/2021 13:12

Love Edith

busybee87 · 06/01/2021 14:57

Someone suggested Astrid. LOVE it but I'm not sure if I'm cool enough to call my daughter Astrid Smile Also does Astrid Freda sound like I'm Scandinavian?

OP posts:
busybee87 · 06/01/2021 15:08

Or Imogen has also been suggested which I like, maybe with a nn Ginny?

Ellmau · 06/01/2021 18:37

What a shame, Beatrix is lovely.

Edith feels a bit dowdy still to me.

Imogen is nice.

Aster?

VenusClapTrap · 06/01/2021 18:47

Edith and Astrid are both beautiful.
