Final 4 boy names

I posted a while ago and we have (almost) decided on a girl's name now. We have a Hannah and will use Rosie/Rose or Sophie if it's a girl. Final boy's names are Ben(jamin), Sam(uel), Jack or Alex(ander). Which one do you like the most? We like classic, traditional names and popularity isn't an issue.

Jack or Alexander but I'd use Xander

MrsWhistledown · 03/01/2021 01:28

Probably Jack but I do love Ben. I like Lex as a nn for Alexander too... sorry I'm not much help!

Mally2020 · 03/01/2021 01:49

I know you haven't asked but prefer rosie for a girl and I think ben is my favourite, any but jack will work really

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/01/2021 04:12

I like your choices OP. I have a slight preference for Sophie to fit with Hannah to my ear (if it matters) but both Rose (nn Rosie) and Sophie are pretty, lovely classics and work well.

I equally don't think you can really go wrong with any of your boys choices (also classic names that go well with Hannah).

But since you asked for opinions:
Benjamin - I just don't like quite as much as the others (personal taste, it always sounds slightly cute to me).
Jack - nice but super popular still (and has been for a long time- there are lots of Jack's about).
Alexander - while a gorgeous name, somehow doesn't quite fit with Hannah in style as well as the others to me.
Samuel - perfect! It's a lovely, friendly sounding name that's fallen outside the top 30 and is decreasing each year (so there aren't as many as there used to be). And it works really well with Hannah thanks to it's fellow biblical/Hebrew origins and similar 2 syllable sound.

alexdgr8 · 03/01/2021 04:39

isn't Samuel 3 syllabubs ?
it is the way i say it.
anyway, it's a good name, i agree with that.
also i like alexander, i wonder why...
Jack is not a proper name.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 03/01/2021 04:46

I love Jack and Benjamin. Less keen on Alex and Sam is the name of my ex so I don't like it for that reason Grin

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/01/2021 05:29

isn't Samuel 3 syllabubs ?

It probably was 3 syllables originally (like Gabriel still is), but the common pronunciation in most languages is more like " Sam - yuel" rather than "Sam - yu- el".

Sandcastles09 · 03/01/2021 06:26

Samuel!

babynamelover · 03/01/2021 06:48

Sam or Jack 😁. All are nice though can't go wrong.

MimiDaisy11 · 03/01/2021 06:57

I like Alexander followed by Benjamin.

ILoveStickers · 03/01/2021 07:39

I don't think you can go wrong here, but Sam and Alexander are favourites of mine.

MinnieJackson · 03/01/2021 07:47

Benjamin

orangejuicer · 03/01/2021 07:54

@MimiDaisy11

I like Alexander followed by Benjamin.
Same here. DS was Alexander for a long time while I was pregnant. Didn't suit him in the end though.
August20 · 03/01/2021 08:04

Jack doesn't seem that classic to me, most Jacks I know are really Johns nicknamed Jack - but I know it's used a lot as a stand alone name now.

I really like Alexander but Benjamin and Samuel are also good names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/01/2021 09:05

Alexander (Alex)

EdgeOfACoin · 03/01/2021 09:41

Samuel and Benjamin are traditional Hebrew/Old Testament names. Hannah was Samuel's mother in the Bible. Either Benjamin or Samuel would work perfectly with Hannah.

I think Jack became super-trendy a few years ago, so I'd opt for Benjamin, Samuel or Alexander over Jack.

Whenwillow · 03/01/2021 09:45

I love all of these, and between me and my cousins, we've used them all!

IckleBear · 03/01/2021 09:53

Jack, it's simple and lovely!

Joeylucy · 03/01/2021 11:05

Really like jack and Benjamin.

OloBo · 03/01/2021 11:07

Ben (although I’ve always preferred Benedict over Benjamin)

lemonandthyme · 03/01/2021 11:08

Benjamin. Gorgeous name.

YoniAndGuy · 03/01/2021 11:18

I've always disliked Samuel, yes it's classic but there's something really plump and dowdy about it to me. Ben and Jack are way too popular, I'd go for Alexander out of your choices, but none of them would hit the spot really. For a lesser used classic name I'd prefer Jonathan (Jon/Jonty), Barnaby (Barney), Laurence (Laurie).

Sophie by a mile for a girl.

MercyBodle · 03/01/2021 12:08

Jack or Alexander (though I prefer Alec or Lex or Xander as a short form.)
For me, as Samuel was Hannah's son in the Bible, it sounds odd as brother and sister, though I suppose most people won't think of that these days.

user1493494961 · 03/01/2021 12:12

Love Samuel, followed by Alexander.

partyatthepalace · 03/01/2021 13:36

Sam(uel) - goes v well w Hannah and not so common now.

Your other choices are all nice, but I'd personally avoid Jack as there were SO many for so long.

Sophie and Rose (nn Rosie) are both v nice too.
