Sister and friend have used name! Sirius instead?

So a very good friend gave birth last week and has named her son Theodore. My sister, who is also having a boy, is planning on naming her some Theo.

Which is f*cking annoying because the ONLY boys name I like is Theodore! To be clear this is a terrible coincidence - I had not discussed names with my friend and have only recently started talking about names with my sister. We both shared in the same phonecall that we liked that name so there is no name-swiping involved.

So, Theodore seems like it is out. What does everyone think of Sirius? Are we far enough removed from Harry Potter?

Dd1 (age 22) is a huge Harry Potter fan she says go for it. Its a nice name.

I like it ( not a hp fan personally)

NotImpossible · 24/12/2020 14:56

If you like Ted/Teddy for Theodore then maybe Edward? (I love both names!)

NotImpossible · 24/12/2020 14:57

Obviously that's no use if you wanted to shortern to Theo!

WestendVBroadway · 24/12/2020 15:01

Not a follower of HP , so did not get the connection at all. I think of Sirius as a star. Surely not everyone will think of HP.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 24/12/2020 15:22

My first thought is ‘dog star’

IndiaMay · 24/12/2020 15:26

I love Sirius but he was my favourite HP character. What about Remus for a Harry Potter theme?

Could you do Theo? Or Teddy/Ted instead if Theodore. Similar feeling names in my head are Rufus, Rupert, Jasper and Rafferty

TicTacTwo · 24/12/2020 15:27

Leo rather than Theo?

Chilldonaldchill · 24/12/2020 15:27

My first thought is Harry Potter, my second is that it's a nice name.
I do prefer Cyrus though.

CorianderQueen · 24/12/2020 15:44

I mean Theodore is a Harry Potter name too 🤷‍♀️

What about Sivus?

Agoodbriskwalk · 24/12/2020 16:41

Teddy is way nicer than Theo.

Carouselfish · 24/12/2020 16:54

I like Silas. I do like Sirius but it does have shortening problems. What about Seth, Tate, Nathaniel, Ray, Elias? Similar feel to Theo in my mind.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 24/12/2020 16:58

I love Sirius, but then I love anything Harry Potter! Its very near the top of my list for my imaginary 3rd son. Grin

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 24/12/2020 17:00

I have a Cyrus... Well received! Never met another.. Except a consultant at our big hospital..

im5050 · 24/12/2020 17:04

I didn’t get the HP ref
I did think of Cyrus the Virus from Con Air though 😂

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 24/12/2020 17:27

My teens say that to ds6. He has no clue.. Likely he will be chuffed to be such a pillar of the famous con community in the future!! Teens are odd like that!!

Londonmummy66 · 24/12/2020 17:43

How about Fedor? Its the Russian equivalent. Looks quite different to Theodore but sounds very similar?

MistleTOEboughski · 24/12/2020 17:48

I kind of like Sirius.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/12/2020 17:49

I prefer Hagrid

JacobReesMogadishu · 24/12/2020 17:53

Tedbar? It’s a proper name.

Cotswoldmama · 24/12/2020 18:15

Not keen on Sirius but I love the name Rubius I sometimes use it as a pet name for my son Reuben!

Standrewsschool · 24/12/2020 18:22

Not keen on Sirius (but not a HP fan).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/12/2020 19:35

Sirius is mainly used for dogs (because it's also known as the the dog star).

Agree with pp that Cyrus or Silas might be more useable (Cyrus is also a celeb baby name like Theodore, so might increase in popularity eventually - get in there first!).

Or what about Theoden - too similar to Theodore? (Yes, it's Lord of the Rings, but has a very cool sound imo).

@CorianderQueen Touché! I feel like a terrible HP fan now.

Seems like a consensus around no Xmas Grin Everyone who knows me also knows I love Harry Potter so I don't think that would help. I'm quite enjoying Cyrus and Silas though, so thank you for the suggestions!

They've done you a favour, it's so so trendy right now. You can find something more distinctive.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 24/12/2020 22:40

I’m not a HP fan so don’t make the connection but our local high school is called Sirius so sounds strange as a name for me. If you really like it though go for it!
