Scottish inspiration

I have been going over and over lists of Scottish names and I'm really wondering if there's any hidden gems I haven't come across. Husband is Scottish and would like to honour that but he's been absolutely useless when it comes to actually coming up with suggestions.

Could you please share some of your favourite Scottish names? For either gender as we have decided not to find out until the birth so trying to prepare names for both boys and girls.

No middle names decided so far. We really are procrastinating when it comes to this but we have a few months to go.

My favourite Scottish names are Ishbel, Fergus and Fraser. I'd feel a bit daft using them though, since I have no Scottish connection.

I'm Scottish and I have to wonder at some of the responses on this thread!

Jura and Talisker are whiskies, you might use those names for your dog but not for your child.

Senga is awful, very old fashioned, a comedy name.

Some Scottish names of kids and babies I know:
Andrew, Lewis, Lachlan, Ewan, Rory, Harris
Eilidh, Mhari, Iona, Morag, Isabel

RaspberryCoulis · 16/12/2020 07:54

Agree, @TheThingWithFeathers. I'm Scottish and my kids all have Scottish names - all mentioned on this thread.

Jura is an island as well as a whisky and although some island names are used (Skye, Iona, Harris, Lewis) Jura is a black labrador name. And Talisker... just no. It's in the same bracket as Glenmorangie or Macallan.

Other names we've come across and not mentioned

Cameron - for a BOY though, it's not a girl's name
Callum / Calum
Blair
Ian / Iain
Ainsley - can be used for either a boy or a girl
Blair - again for a boy
Kirsten or Kirsty
Flora
Fiona or Shona

MaverickDanger · 16/12/2020 07:56

How popular is Lachlan currently?

magnarocks · 16/12/2020 07:57

Angus
Hamish
Logan
Magnus
William
