There's a boy in my nephew's class called Endellion with the brightest ginger hair you've even seen. Endellion means fire soul.

What's the most serendipitous name you've come across?

a girl called Wynter with hair as white as snow

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/12/2020 14:00

A girl called Raven with sleek black shiny hair. Not completely expected as her mum is fair and dad isn't that dark either.

VenusClapTrap · 13/12/2020 15:05

My cousin Damian.

VenusClapTrap · 13/12/2020 15:07

Oh and I used to know a Heathcliff who was dark and brooding and breathtakingly handsome.

ILoveStickers · 13/12/2020 15:08

@VenusClapTrap 😄😄😄

I know a little Clara with unexpectedly red/blonde hair - Clara means "bright".

Magpiecomplex · 13/12/2020 15:09

Little boy called Chase who is always running off!

Dillo10 · 13/12/2020 15:24

@VenusClapTrap 😂😂😂

Serendipity

A girl called Grace at my secondary school was so graceful, she had a really elegant neck and profile and was so gentle, the name suited her perfectly.

Euan means "well-born, fortunate". By the age of two and a half Euan been diagnosed with ASD. You would think his name ironic, but actually, he has been blessed with amazing professionals: consultant paediatricians, teachers, learning assistants, support workers, throughout his life. He is a contented child and brings great joy to those who make the effort to get to know him. He is well-born and fortunate indeed.

I know a Shiloh who is the most chilled baby I’ve ever met... she’s always peaceful. Shiloh means Peace.

Firebird83 · 13/12/2020 23:32

I know a Sunny who has a really happy, positive personality.

CaffiSaliMali · 14/12/2020 11:33

I used to work with a lady called Serene who was lovely, nothing ever seemed to stress her out, she was just so calm and, well, serene.

ChessieFL · 14/12/2020 11:43

I wonder how many of these are self fulfilling prophecy? Not the hair colour ones obviously, but I wonder if the lady called Serene is just sitting there wishing she could just tell everyone to fuck off but feels she has to live up to her name?!Grin

Kippure · 14/12/2020 11:51

Not sure I would class Endellion as entirely 'serendipitous' -- even if his red hair wasn't evident at birth, he presumably has a red-haired parent, or at least parents who are aware of red hair in the immediate family. And if little Endellion turned out to be blonde/hot-tempered/a survivor through tough times or illness, the name would have seemed just as applicable.

I get baffled by people who don't look up the meaning of their child's name. I know a Fionn whose dad is a black South African, so it seemed like an odd decision to call him a name that means white or fair-haired, especially as Fionn himself has been dark-skinned, black-haired, and brown-eyed from birth. And his mother is an Irish speaker so it's not that she didn't know.

Namingacharacter · 14/12/2020 15:33

@Kippure
Neither of Endellion's parents are red-haired but I'm not aware of his extended family (obviously😂) But I totally get where you're coming from.

My sister wanted to give her son Cassius as a middle name until I pointed out it means "narcissistic or vain". It was quickly vetoed 😂

Maybe people dont always care about name meanings? Maybe somewhere named when finding out such information required a trip to the library as the internet didn't exist? Maybe some are family names?

My DS2s name means dark/swarthy. He was dark haired when he was born but ended up a curly blond toddler, he did go dark again as an adult. DH is dark, DS1 was dark and I was darling but was a blind child. All worked out in the end.

Kanaloa · 14/12/2020 21:05

I always thought Endellion was a girls name. I once looked after a baby named Joy and for the two years I looked after her she was the happiest child. Her mum dropped her off on her first day and she just waved and smiled. Nothing ever bothered her.

SionnachRua · 14/12/2020 21:10

I taught a Felicity who was the happiest child alive.

On the other hand, I did also teach a dyspraxic Grace and a Faith who seriously questioned religion Grin

DS used to be babysat by a very laid-back Storm.
