Stripper name?

Not my words, but playing on my mind as someone said it...

Talulah?

Also, preferred spelling? Tallulah or Talulah? Would likely mainly be Lu or Lulah as we're a family of serial name-shorteners.

@VenusClapTrap

I don’t associate it with strippers, but I don’t like it. It’s too frilly and a bit silly for me. I wouldn’t want to be called Tallulah myself; I’d find it a bit embarrassing. I can imagine introducing myself and being mocked - ooooh, this is Talloooooolah! with an eye roll.
Do people you know actually behave like that!?

Only if you’re friends with a right bunch of bitches

stella1know · 14/12/2020 19:16

Tallulah Riley is beautiful.
A Tallulah lives in a an Edwardian villa in Highgate, is fashionable, rich, very slightly boho but rich enough to get away with it. Looks like the singer Birdie. Arty, Gap year, Skiing and private school associations. So nothing too bad really.

Not a stripper name to me.

micc · 14/12/2020 20:57

Whaaaaat? I would of never thought Tallulah and a stripper name! Like at all!! I think it's a little frilly but I love it. Am I missing something? Why do so many people think stripper?

I also hate that way of thinking. A nice name is a nice name, might not be everyones cup of tea but to say someones baby sounds like a stripper is weird.

isawthat · 14/12/2020 20:59

I don’t think it’s a stripper name

allfurcoatnoknickers · 14/12/2020 21:12

Agree with @stella1know. That's exactly what I imagine a Tallulah to be like - slightly Boho parents. Something like mum's a poet and dad runs a hedgefund that invests in eco companies or does impact investing or similar.

Not anyone I know now. But I certainly came across people like that in my youth, yes.

Poor you! I don't think I've ever met anyone past puberty who behaves like that. And i have a name that rhymes with "willy" so i got that sort of thing a lot!

It makes me think of the thirteen-year-old Jodie Foster playing a gangster’s moll and singing ‘My Name is Tallulah’ with all the precocious cynicism of a 45-year old brothel madam. I’d class it with Lolita and maybe Delilah.

stella1know · 15/12/2020 12:44

Delilah sounds like a willowy nature-wildlife artist selling elegant wood carved art on etsy. Is young, pretty and american. Loves cabin chic and minimalist Kinfolk clothing and interiors. Posts insta pictures of herself picking prairie wildflowers and practices gratitude. Reads Walden and Emerson on loop. Flower hairbands and braids and vintage prairie dresses with tiny waists. Looks like Beatrice Borromeo.

I am technically a millennial, although approaching 40, so maybe my name associations of Tallulah and Delilah are different to someone who watched 80s/90s hollywood films.

See for me, Delilah falls into the "biblical whore" category. And I've never even read the bible.

@stella1know

Anyone identifying Tallulah with Gangsters molls or show girls ( or Jodie Foster) is actually referencing a 1970s film. Probably time to reclaim it. Your version of Delilah sounds slightly irritating but definitely not whorish.

stella1know · 15/12/2020 13:26

@Divebar Yep, accepted, the “practices gratitude” whilst picking wildflowers imagery is probably the most annoying bit 🤣

AnguaResurgam · 15/12/2020 15:37

"See for me, Delilah falls into the "biblical whore" category"

She was a voluptuous and treacherous woman, ready to betray, but was she a whore?

Genuine question - can't remember! Suspect Bible association is the strongest one globally

LittleTiger007 · 16/12/2020 11:26

Delilah was a biblical whore, temptress. Yes.
It would put me off for my own child but I know a lovely little girl called Delilah. Great song by Tom Jones too.

linda851 · 16/12/2020 11:37

Stripper name? Absolutely not.
Name for a pet perhaps but then so is Lucy and Lucy is a delightful name.

Someone will always have something to say.

SumAndSubstance · 16/12/2020 12:21

I don’t buy into ‘stripper names’. Surely there are loads of strippers with top 20 names.

I always thought that the implication with ‘stripper names’ was that they were often stage names. So if your name was Fiona, you might go on stage as Candy it Tallulah, not just that only babies with those names were destined to be strippers? I wouldn’t particularly say it’s my area of expertise though...

pipipi · 16/12/2020 13:46

Correct. Stripper names are stage names. I was a stripper for 1 month. Unpleasant experience but I made more than I've ever made in 1 month and chose to do it so can't complain. Here to say that most strippers real names are very ordinary. I recall 1 Beth, 1 Sophie, 1 Ashley, 1 Georgia amongst others. Their stripper name choices were either "exotic" think Jasmine or Aliya. "Cute" think Lucie or Mia or objects and adjectives think "Crystal", "Heaven" or "Tiny". Extra superfluous girly names like "Arabella" popular too. But 98% of them had ordinary real names. Never met a Tallulah but it does feel like a stripper name choice.

steppemum · 16/12/2020 13:50

Tallulah for me is a character i the Maisy books. Wasn't she the chicken?

At the time I had never heard of it!

I like it. All names have some associations, this is no better or worse than others

Minty82 · 16/12/2020 14:26

Just watched Jodie Foster singing My Name is Tallulah for the first time since I was a child and it’s deeply disturbing!

Whatthebloodyell · 16/12/2020 17:10

Minty82 it wouldn’t get made today!

Though to be honest , even when I watched it as a child more than 25 years ago, it made me uncomfortable!

Changeythenamey · 16/12/2020 18:45

Nah, not a stripper. I think it does sound very girly, possibly a bit ‘frilly’ but compared to her contemporaries there will be delilahs, otillies, ophelias so Tallulah isn’t too frilly imho.

If she grows up to prefer something more plain, Lu, Lules, Tali and Tala are all good options.

ldnstb123 · 17/12/2020 23:33

My daughter is a Tallulah and I get nothing but compliments on how pretty her name is, I don't personally shorten it but some people call her Lula
