Cassidy still a boy's name?

I adore this name and just recently brought it up to my DH as it being one of my guilty pleasures. This will probably be our last child and so I am really overthinking everything and wanting it to be the perfect name. I am aware it is more common for girls now but is there any chance this is still a boy's name?

I would think of Cassidy being a girls name sorry.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/12/2020 16:49

No, I think it's similar to Madison and Mackenzie - in that it's a surname used as a given name that has gone much more to the girls side as it has quite a feminine sound, sorry.

Similar boys names of Cassius or Cassian/Caspian are still thoroughly in the boys camp though?

Changethetoner · 08/12/2020 17:28

hmmm I only ever met one, and she was a little girl.

Boxofpinot · 08/12/2020 17:34

Never knew it was a boys name

FippertyGibbett · 08/12/2020 17:35

It’s a girl’s name.

MikeUniformMike · 08/12/2020 18:21

It's a surname.
You could use it as a middle name but don't use it as a first name.

PleasantVille · 08/12/2020 18:22

Still?

I didn't even know it was, I don't know any personally but I'd assume it was a surname or a girl's name

Figgygal · 08/12/2020 18:25

I’d assume girl but it’s not a good name for either

Redlocks28 · 08/12/2020 18:25

Did it used to be a boys’ name then?!

I would say it was very much a name for a girl.

GaraMedouar · 08/12/2020 18:25

Girl’s name

MrsBlobby43 · 08/12/2020 18:27

It's very much a girls name x

june2007 · 08/12/2020 18:32

Never met anyone with the name.I think of Butch CAssidy. therefor boy.

OkPedro · 08/12/2020 18:33

I’ve never heard it being used as a name never mind popular. It’s a surname where I live.

Elasticizer · 08/12/2020 18:36

I work with a guy Cassidy, it suits him well

kateybeth79 · 08/12/2020 18:48

I thought it was just a girls name 😳

Benjispruce2 · 08/12/2020 18:50

I thought it was a surname. Never heard of it as a first name.

SwedishEdith · 08/12/2020 18:53

Butch Cassidy could end up being a nasty nickname although Cassy/ie sounds more like a female name. I'm in the 'it's a surname' camp though.

LindaEllen · 08/12/2020 18:59

I only know one (shortened to Cassie) and she's a girl.

AlwaysLatte · 08/12/2020 19:06

I've only ever heard of this as a girl's name. A boy will probably get teased and called 'Butch'.

DubbinDobbin · 08/12/2020 19:09

I've only heard it as a boy's name

HolyBuckets · 08/12/2020 19:30

I've never heard it for a boy, apart from in Preacher but that's his surname.

decemberbluess · 08/12/2020 20:48

I have only ever met male Cassidys but even then it's been a long time since I have and when I've seen it online now I can only come across references for it as a girls name.

Also didn't know who Butch Cassidy is and now I can't unsee it. Is this as much of an association in the UK too?

I would like it as a middle as suggest by a PP and probably going for a classic first name to balance out the now 'girly' feel it has. Could this even remotely work or should I just take it off my list?

Philip Cassidy
James Cassidy
Theodore Cassidy

Still a girls name or surname to me sorry..,not that surnames as middle names are wrong, my son has 2 middle names, one of which is my maiden name so could still use it

Chilldonaldchill · 08/12/2020 21:59

I only know two and both are boys - one is five and the other is 6 months.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/12/2020 22:08

Butch Cassidy is a well known reference in the UK (it's a famous film as well as a real person) but Cassidy is absolutely fine in the middle spot - lots of people have unusual middle names and most people won't know what his middle name is anyway!

I think I like James Cassidy best, but Philip is very nice too. Theodore is too trendy for my taste but lots of people love it, so I wouldn't blink at a Theodore Cassidy.
