As in Toni Morrison. What do you think?

Don't know who that is. I would think of Toni and Guy. Not a nice name in my view.

grandmasterstitch · 08/12/2020 09:55

Fine if short for Antonia but I wouldn't use it on its own

Peachbubble · 08/12/2020 09:55

Not keen

ArtichokeAardvark · 08/12/2020 09:56

I know a Toni short for Antonia which is pretty. I wouldn't use Toni as the full name though.

AdaColeman · 08/12/2020 10:04

Alright as a nn for Antonia or Antoinette, both of which are lovely, but I'm not keen on it as a stand alone name.

emmathedilemma · 08/12/2020 10:36

Sorry, I think it's horrible. Very dated.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/12/2020 11:55

I adore the name Antonia - it's beautiful and very elegant. I'm not keen on Toni - like others I find it dated (80's sounding). However if you call her Toni but put Antonia on the birth certificate, she can choose for herself when adult (Antonia has loads of nn's including Toni, Annie, Anya, Nia, Nina etc).

tonidhradhjfrtjjkkid · 08/12/2020 12:00

Quickly NC'd for this!

My name is Toni and I fucking hate it (born in the 80s of course).

As much as I love Toni Morrison that's not what people usually think of, they think bad cringe 80s name, along the same lines as Tonya Tracey Kylie etc.

I hate my name. My parents didn't even give me the full name Antonia so I can't even use that, though I've been considering changing it by deed poll for a few years.

Also, people will spell it Tony all the time.

So from a Toni I say don't do it.

MimiDaisy11 · 08/12/2020 12:25

As a nn to Antonia it could work, but agree with others not to use it as a full name.

MikeUniformMike · 08/12/2020 13:02

I know a Toni short for Antonia. Once I got used to not thinking 'Tony' when the name was mentioned. Not many baby Tonys around, so shouldn't be an issue.

The full name is much nicer.

Antonin · 08/12/2020 14:08

I knew a Toni and didn’t think very much about it — it suited her and she was ok with it and never used her full name of Antonia

ILikeStrongTea · 08/12/2020 16:46

Awful, dated. And ‘Tone’ as a shortening is worse.

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 08/12/2020 17:15

I don't think it should be used at all but if it is it's definitely a boys name

zigaziga · 08/12/2020 19:18

My views on Toni are the same as those expressed by almost everyone in the Kayleigh thread ... 80s mean girl...

Nell96 · 08/12/2020 19:34

Antonia is a pretty name with lots of nn options. I'm not keen on Toni - feels quite dated and masculine to me.

Roselilly36 · 08/12/2020 19:38

Antonia is a gorgeous name IMHO

Lyricallie · 08/12/2020 19:43

I think it's pretty. The only Tonis I've ever met have been girls and they suited it. I think one was short for Antonia and another was just Toni. They were both born in the early to mid 90s.

PurePeppermint · 08/12/2020 19:49

It seems very dated to me. The only Toni I know ended up marrying a Tony, which I guess is the risk you take when you use a name like that.

june2007 · 08/12/2020 19:50

On it,s own not. Antonia, Antonella, Antoinette yes.

emilybrontescorsett · 08/12/2020 23:21

Don't like it and the Toni I knew hated her name.

DramaAlpaca · 08/12/2020 23:34

I'm not keen, but its long form Antonia is gorgeous.

Copernico · 08/12/2020 23:41

I don’t think MN baby names is quite the corner of the internet to appreciate Toni Morrison or the name Toni!

fatherliamdeliverance · 09/12/2020 18:09

Great lady to be named for and I rather like it! I met a very smart, businesslike, outdoorsy woman quite recently called Toni, short for Tonia and it really suited her.
