Ada popularity

Due a baby girl in a few months and we have been set on this name for a long time! Admittedly because of Peaky Blinders, I'm not sure I knew of it before. Obviously we aren't the only ones to have taken a liking to it as it's really risen in popularity in recent years (I know its an old fashioned name)

I don't mind using a top 50 name but I read an article the other day that said baby name lists are usually about 1.5 years behind and that actually this is set to be the most popular name this year! Don't know if that's true.

Basically, my question is do you know of many baby Adas? Smile

I've liked Ada for a long time (partly for Ada Lovelace and partly as I like palindrome names!) but unfortunately the double whammy of Peaky Blinders and the popularity of the similar Ava, means that Ada has risen so dramatically it will likely date quite badly (it's gone from barely used - outside the top 500, to the top 50 in 10 years and it's still rising).

As for current local popularity- go here and scroll down to "Figure 5 Explore the Top 100 girls names by Local authority" to get the figures for your county : www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/bulletins/babynamesenglandandwales/2019

Lovely name. I know of one 2 year old Ada.

I mean yes they’re published mid year for the year before (ie 2019 data came out mid 2020) but there is no way Ada will be the most popular name. It’s just within the top 50 and given it’s been rising it will probably go up another few places this year. It won’t be beating Olivia and Amelia yet!

Similar names that aren’t as popular are Ida and Aida (I—eeda)

Whenever I hear the name 'Ada', I think of someone's old auntie or a receptionist at the doctor's surgery; I'd put it in the same category as Eileen, Doreen and Maureen. Not very classy. Who cares whether or not it is in the top fifty?

Use Dark Greener names as it uses ONS statistics. It was number 47 in 2019.

SparklyGlitter95 · 08/12/2020 14:42

I know one Ada, she is 3

Fabulous name!

NorbertMeubles · 08/12/2020 14:44

It's my Grandma's name. It's lovely.

AlwaysLatte · 08/12/2020 14:45

I only knew one Ada. She would be over 100 if she was alive now!

Plastichearts · 08/12/2020 14:45

I don’t know any but there are lots of Avas around toddler age.

Carrotcakey · 08/12/2020 14:46

I know 2 little Adas 6 and 2. Both quite posh (am I allowed to say that?!)
I don’t think it will be top fifty.

If you love it, use it. Personally I prefer Ida which is much less used.

I know an Ada born in August this year, it's a lovely name

fife28 · 08/12/2020 14:55

I know an Ayda, and two Ava's. I think both are lovely names :-)
