Deborah?

We already decided my little girl's name will start with D, it's a sort of family thing. But beyond that, we haven't decided much, because I'm SUPER indecisive, I never want to give up on a name, and my husband and I can't agree. One name that I like is Deborah, I'm usually a fan of the classics, but I worry that this is just too old fashioned. What do you think? Also, can anyone think of any nns for Deborah other than Debbie? My husband doesn't really mind Deborah (although it's not exactly his fave), but he hates the nn Debbie.

Jokes aside it's a good classic name. Debs would probably be the best nn. Better than Debbie. Someone I know called themselves Borah

Do you think Dora could be an nn for her when she is a child?

I really don't like Deborah. It sounds old fashioned but not in a good retro kind of way iyswim.

How about Deirdre?

Makes me think of Disco 2000 as well, in a good way.

Thing is you can’t control nicknames your entire child’s life - any Deborah will inevitably get Debbie at some point. Which I think is quite nice too tbh.

Or how about Delilah (Lila, Dee).

I'm really not keen. I didn't like it when when it was fashionable and now it's very dated.

I love the name Deborah. How about Dee Bee for a nn.

I actually like it. I know it was super popular in the 60s, but it's hardly a Beverley. It's a classic Biblical name, and has a nice soft sound. Unfortunately, many people just can't think outside the box 'Oh my auntie is Deborah = dated, unuseable'.

I find it nicer than many of the Victorian names that are so popular, eg Ivy, Florence, Elsie.

Apart from Debbie, Debs, you could have Debo for a nickname.

I think just Dee is a nice nn. I know Georgia's who just go by Gee so works the same way for Deborah.

It's really 1960s. All the new grannies in my town are called Debbie, Karen, Carol, Julie. And Dora is the explorer.

I like it - it's a good solid bible name, traditionally used, and if it's good enough for the Mitfords... (They went for Debo as a nn).

I think it's currently less dated than some of the other names suggested Darcy, Delilah which have peaked and arguably gone downmarket (if you care).

Have you considered Delia? There's a little Delia in my DS's year, and also a Dahlia.

I always like the name Debbie, she’s bound to get called that so not point using Deborah if you don’t.

I like the name Deborah. Much prefer that spelling to Debra. It's not compulsory to shorten a child's name (I've always refused to have mine shortened, and so has my daughter). If it happens anyway, Debo or Debs are both better than Debbie.
