We've narrowed our names down to the ones below but would love to hear others' opinions. We have a three syllable Irish surname beginning with D.

Gabe/Gabriel ( favourite)
Harris ( love this but I know there are loads of boys names Harry)
Rory ( love but will sound v Irish with surname)
Kellan ( husband loves, I worry people might hear 'Kevin')
Leo (a favourite)
Alex
Eric ( we loved Erica for a girl but not sure if Eric will have old man connotations)

I love Gabriel, it's my DS middle name.

emmathedilemma · 01/12/2020 09:00

I like Eric, Alex and Harris on your list. Harris is a different name to Harry and the ones I know don't get called Harry as a nn. I don't mind Rory but i prefer the Irish or Scottish spellings and pronunciation.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/12/2020 09:08

Love.
Gabriel (Gabe)
Leo
Rory.
Alex

Okay.
Eric.

Don't like.
Harris
Kellan.

Creamcheeseon · 01/12/2020 09:10

Perhaps not helpful, but I love them all!!

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 09:15

@creamcheeseon that's great that you love them all!

It's nice to see that people like Gabriel, it's not a common name in my area.

Love Gabriel, Eric had Harris

I think if you're concerned about popularity then obviously avoid Rory as it's rocketed in the last few years. Avoid Leo too

Holliej · 01/12/2020 09:34

Love Gabe and Rory. Tbh they are all nice names x

Chickenuggets · 01/12/2020 09:35

Gabriel!

Bearcub01 · 01/12/2020 09:53

Gabe is quite cool and unusual!
I love Rory, it’s on my list but OH keeps dismissing it! Love Leo and Alex too.

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 01/12/2020 10:59

I love Eric that would be my choice

Nell96 · 01/12/2020 11:10

Gabe/Gabriel - quite like the full name, not keen on Gabe. Possibly overly religious, if that bothers you?
Harris - really like
Rory - really like, though seems to be getting popular at the moment
Kellan - never heard of it before, but quite like it
Leo - like as a nn
Alex - bit dull
Eric - not keen

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 11:30

I've always loved Rory and even put off naming my dog that incase we wanted the name for a baby. I hadn't realised it was so popular now. I'd rather a name that isn't very common

Gabriel (Gabe) is far from unusual. Im falling over them

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 12:17

@Awwlookatmybabyspider it's definitely not popular where I live.

Like Gabriel, Alex but would probably use Alexander, and Eric but would spell Erik. Don't dislike the others though.

LarkDescending · 01/12/2020 12:30

I like Rory and Leo.

If you like both Alex and Eric, how about Alec?

VenusClapTrap · 01/12/2020 12:36

Eric!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 01/12/2020 12:44

I like: Gabriel, Rory and Eric.

Personally don’t like Harris because I don’t like surnames as first names, but of course a lot of people do.

If you’re just using Alex, he could spend his whole life explaining that no, his full name is not Alexander.

I know a Kellan.. his family call him “Kelly” quite often... I don’t love it. Prefer Stellan, but could be a bit out there assuming you aren’t Scandinavian.

Bruce2 · 01/12/2020 14:36

Gabriel 100%
Love it, on my boys list too

Eric good too

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 14:50

Thanks everyone. Gabriel was one that both my and DH agreed on but then his MIL criticised it and it made me waver. I know...he should never have shared it with her.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 01/12/2020 15:00

Don’t let that put you off, people will have opinions on all of them x

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/12/2020 15:19

His MIL criticized the name (so your mum)Confused. Anyway that's not really point. Whoever mum it was they've had their day naming their kids.

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 15:29

@Awwlookatmybabyspider oops I meant my MIL.

I love Gabriel, such a lovely name. I know a few Harris's (I live in Scotland) and none of them ever get called Harry.

TrixieHeliotrope · 01/12/2020 16:09

Gabe/Gabriel - Gabriel's better in my opinion
Harris - nice, much better than Harry
Rory - alright, nothing wrong with sounding Irish
Kellan nice
Leo - quite nice, would be better as Leonardo
Alex - prefer Alexander
Eric - meh
