Middle name for Rowan

I'm expecting a girl. We are Scottish and our older son has a Scottish first name, normal second name and our very Scottish double barrelled surname. Looking for something to go with Rowan-pronounced row rhyming with cow not row the boat. Any ideas?

Have never heard it pronounced to rhyme with cow.

Rowan Elizabeth 'Double Barrel' sounds fab.

Cheesybiscuits01 · 28/11/2020 20:53

I think rhyming with cow is more a Scottish thing and row the boat an English pronunciation. I like Elizabeth actually. I was hoping for a shorter middle name but haven't come across one I like. Might just have to accept the really long name. Poor kid!

My name is Rowan Elizabeth and honestly I get SO many compliments for it! As an adult I love my name and I always get remembered for it. Didn't like it much as a kid though! Smile

Cheesybiscuits01 · 28/11/2020 21:59

@thefrustratedredhead really? I'm hoping she loves it but who knows. Cheeky question but do you also have red hair? Apparently the meaning is little redhead and with our genes its possible.

As Rowan is pretty popular these days for boys and girls, maybe something more unusual for middle name incase there's a couple of RoWans /RoMans in class:

Rowan Margaret
Rowan Pearl
Rowan Vivienne
Rowan Sadie
Rowan Victoria

Zofloratheexplora · 28/11/2020 22:09

Rowan Louise
Rowan Ruth
Rowan Viola

@Cheesybiscuits01 I have been trying to maintain 'natural' red hair since I was a teenager. I love red hair and I've always been told it means little redhead! Unfortunately for me it's all dye...
Rowan would be gorgeous on a little redhead! I really do love it xx

I prefer the Scottish pronunciation of Row to rhyme with Cow because it won't get so muddled with Roman, Rory, Reuben and other popular choices.
As Rowan has quite a modern trendy 'feel' these days, how about a classic middle name
Rowan Anne
Rowan Mary
Rowan Louise
If not maybe another trendy middle name like Isla or Aria etc

Cheesybiscuits01 · 29/11/2020 21:02

@thefrustratedredhead I love red hair. I don't have it myself but got my fingers crossed for this little one xx

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I think we are going for Rowan Elizabeth. Fingers crossed no one we know uses it before us. Got a few pregnant friends.

I though Rowan was a boys name? My ds best friend is called Rowan and he's a boy. Either way,
Rowan Angelina
Rowan Anastasia
Rowan Evelyn
Rowan Imogen
Rowan Victoria
Rowan Ethel

FairfaxAikman · 30/11/2020 10:31

Trixie Rowan pronounced like row a boat is male and Rowan to rhyme with cow is female I think.
Rowan (to rhyme with cow) trees are the focus of superstition in Scotland - they are lucky as they protect from witches.

Whatsyourflava · 30/11/2020 12:21

Rowan's unisex. Very popular trendy name at the moment for both girls and boys but in Scotland it's very much a girl name (top 100 for girls but not boys). @TrixieHeliotrope
Looking at the popularity graphs, it could well transition to a predominately girl name in US soon.
RoMan and RoHan are only used for boys though.

PlantPotting · 30/11/2020 12:26

My baby daughter is Rowan (pronounced like Row your boat). So it's a girl name to me. It gets shortened to 'Row' (a boat) a lot already by people which is annoying but it's accidental.

Rowan Elizabeth is nice, I actually prefer the name Elizabeth to Rowan now

CloudyVanilla · 30/11/2020 19:16

My first though was Rowan Elise but Rowan Elizabeth is lovely too :)

LittleBlueRidingBoot · 02/12/2020 15:54

Rowan Evina

ButterscotchWhip · 03/12/2020 10:30

I absolutely love the name Rowan (either pronounciation). I think Rowan Elizabeth is beautiful. Good choice. x
