Can I use Priya

For a Muslim baby girl? We're totally secular, grandparents are culturally more religious.

Will we raise too many eyebrows?

Her sister is Zara.

No, it's a car make. Poor girl.

lovemelongtime · 25/11/2020 19:25

Or should I say it "sounds" like a car brand.

HotPatootiebootie · 25/11/2020 19:26

Priya is beautiful ❤️

Tadpolesandfroglets · 25/11/2020 19:26

I know a Priya, pretty name. Go for it.

formerbabe · 25/11/2020 19:27

Such a gorgeous name...love it.

Pinkfondue · 25/11/2020 19:27

I love it.

frazzledasarock · 25/11/2020 19:29

Means darling. In Islam the meaning of the name is important if it’s a good meaning you can call your child’s whatever is culturally suitable altho most Muslim parents prefer Arabic names as they think they’re more Islamic in some way.

The car make is a Prius isn’t it, would kids at school make that connection and tease her about it?

BecomeStronger · 25/11/2020 19:29

Is your query because it's not a Muslim name?

JemimaTiggywinkle · 25/11/2020 19:31

As long as you’re not

HipHopBanzai · 25/11/2020 19:32

I love the name Priya. I think it's beautiful.

It might cause some raised eyebrows amongst more traditional family members (is it traditionally hindu?) but I wouldn't let that stop me!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 25/11/2020 19:32

Sorry pressed send too soon!

As long as you’re not bothered about having a Muslim name, I can’t see a problem. It’s a lovely name.

Newuser991 · 25/11/2020 19:33

No, it's a car make. Poor girl.
😲🤯🤦🏼‍♀️
SillyOldMummy · 25/11/2020 19:34

I don't think anyone would associate it with a Prius, and anyway what a rubbish way of teasing someone that would be.

Priya is a beautiful name (perhaps biased, as I have only ever known Priya's /Preeya's who were absolutely lovely and by chance extremely pretty!). I can't comment on whether it is appropriate to use, however.

Calligraphy572 · 25/11/2020 19:34

Beautiful name! Zara and Priya... very nice combo.

sofiaaaaaa · 25/11/2020 19:34

Can you explain further why it would be an issue?

I’m not Asian so my thoughts are completely irrelevant but in my experience, it’s more Indian girls that are called Priya

sofiaaaaaa · 25/11/2020 19:35

My bestie at school was called Priya and no one referred to her as “Prius”. At all. That’s pretty racist no?

NannyR · 25/11/2020 19:36

Priya is a beautiful name.

BecomeStronger · 25/11/2020 19:37

I think OP is saying child is Muslim but the name isn't. (Hindu, I think). I'm afraid I don't know if this is an issue, who do you think it might cause problems with/for?

Pickledpenguin · 25/11/2020 19:39

@lovemelongtime

No, it's a car make. Poor girl.
Not if you spell it or pronounce it correctly it is not.
Veterinari · 25/11/2020 19:39

@lovemelongtime

No, it's a car make. Poor girl.
Wrong. And rude. It's an established Indian name It doesn't even sound like Prius
Stumpedasatree · 25/11/2020 19:39

I love Priya.

Grooticle · 25/11/2020 19:41

It’s a lovely name and pretty well known, I can’t imagine anybody in real life thinking it’s a car name. I’m afraid I don’t know enough about the cultural issues to comment on those.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 25/11/2020 19:42

@lovemelongtime

No, it's a car make. Poor girl.
Seriously? Priya is quite a common Indian name, have you really not heard of it?
OwlOne · 25/11/2020 19:44

Priya is lovely! I think Roisin Ingle an Irish Journalist (sort of) called her daughter this. Her husband is also white not from India, so they have no reason other than they liked the name. I remember thinking, wow, bit strange appropriating an Indian name when I heard it first but it is a very pretty name and actually a lot of people have a lot of knowledge of Indian culture so why not?!

Spaghettibetty345 · 25/11/2020 19:45

@lovemelongtime

You’ve just offended millions of Indian girls Blush

It’s typically a Hindu name. If you’re not practising Muslim then I guess it’s fine to use.
