Hi everyone! I thought this would be quite fun to do.. NAMES YOU USED TO LOVE NOW DISLIKE!

I absolutely love the simple and sweet name Ella. However, the popularity of the name put me off! (I feel like it's really come back now) it's so beautiful but the fact so many people have it make me dislike it.. BUT ITS SO PRETTY😭

Your turn!!

When I was a little girl, my son was going to be called Caleb and my daughter was going to be Simone. I was adamant.

Non of my children have those names!! Grin.

As I got older I loved Archie, but then the nasty character in Eastenders spoiled that name for me.

username1724 · 19/11/2020 00:00

When I was young I was sure I'd call my dd Jadie, Shanie or Chanelle. Dd is none of those 🤣

Scarby9 · 19/11/2020 00:02

My children were going to be called Julian and Daisy. They were also going to be identical twins.

Mumoftwo12345 · 19/11/2020 00:05

Esther. I love it, but a local politician I can't stand has that name and she's spoiled it for me Grin

Ava - I first fell for it 25 years ago, as I felt Ava was short and simple but very feminine and elegant (a la Ava Gardner) plus a cool palindrome. But now they are everywhere (along with Ivys, Evie's, Ada's, Eva's, Evelyn's and Eve's -another simple palindrome fave), it just feels too overused.

Isabel - same as Ava, loved this pretty classic before it became a trend but now with loads of Isabelle's, Isobel's and Isabella's (plus the odd Annabel and Arabella) it's getting very samey.

Lilia- always loved (such a pretty, soft, lyrical sound) but there are so many Lily's now, plus people also say it reminds them of sanitary towels?

India- so gorgeous but people get very judgemental about it (they don't seem to realise it was used as a given name (after the river Indus) before the country was named (so colonial issues don't really apply)).

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 19/11/2020 00:47

Titania my name of choice as a child now just reminds me of titanic

Ghosts2020 · 19/11/2020 03:37

Mia again someone else ruined the name
Sasha met a girl that was just weird gone off the name
Riley chavvy now
Caoimhe go through stages of loving and hating
Katy to close to a family member that we don't talk to
Isabella not a fan now overused
Phoebe meh
Violet sounds too harsh now
Robyn met a horrible person called robyn

Alfie overused
Ethan bit cringey
Liam don't hate just partners brothers name

@pinkfluffybunny, I remember Archie in Emmerdale too, and it's the image I have of the name.

I don't understand the popularity of the name at all.

SeaKingdom · 19/11/2020 11:29

My favourite boys names as a teenager were Scott and Gary. They haven't aged well, although I still like them devoid of context, actually.
One of my favourite girl's names was Crystal, also Sandra, again somewhat gone off them now. Why yes I was a teenager in the 80s, why do you ask?
Then in my late 20s/early 30s I really liked Jack for a boy and Grace for a girl, but then they became really popular - still like them, especially Jack, but couldn't use them .

EverythingsTicketyBoo · 19/11/2020 11:32

@Mumoftwo12345, a Scouse Tory is just wrong. I like the name Esther but it makes me think of the woman who set up Childline and that blonde scouse tory.

I find that names seem to be used in waves. For a while it seemed that every new mum I met had a daughter called Mollie or a son called Harry, then it was Chloe or Jack, and I would think 'another, then it was one'. Then it was Ethan and Caitlin.

StrawScarecrow · 19/11/2020 11:41

@seakingdom my ds is at nursery with a 2yo Gary it always makes me smile.

As a child I was determined my kids would be called Jordan and Elaine. Just no Confused

Champy87 · 19/11/2020 16:43

I used to love Maxine and Carla as a child. Whenever i made up a persona playing barbies or mums and dads etc, she was called Carla McKenzie.

OP - my sister is Ella but she is 35. The only Ella in our school growing up. I always say to her everyone will assume she is younger than she actually is as it became popular in the 00's.

turkeyboots · 19/11/2020 17:02

I loved Isobel. But when pg I met a horrid adult one so it when off the list.

PurBal · 19/11/2020 17:06

Erin. Discussed it with my ex. We broke up, got his now wife pregnant a matter of months later. Then used the name. Grr.

HmmSureJan · 19/11/2020 19:42

At 19 and first engagedi liked Matthew and Laura. Quite nice names. However my favourite was "Jordan" for a boy or girl 😱. Katie Price wasn't known yet, I just liked it. Not sure what I was thinking tbh.

emilybrontescorsett · 21/11/2020 06:16

Carol, Oliver and Bradley.

emilybrontescorsett · 21/11/2020 06:20

As a child I also loved Judith. An older relative married a Judith, she was very elegant and stylish. Then I met another Judith and it out me off the name.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 21/11/2020 08:12

Gabriel - liked it until I met one who was an entitled, obnoxious toe-rag

Twickerhun · 21/11/2020 08:16

As I child I always wanted a baby Sydney - what was I thinking ?! Thank fuck I grew up

Standrewsschool · 21/11/2020 08:22

Charlotte , from Charlottes Web. Thought it was unusual and pretty. Still like the name, but became too popular.

Sabrina - from Charlie’s Angels. She was brunette, like me. At the time, I felt that to be pretty on tv, you had to be blond such as Farah Fawcett. Then came along ‘Sabrina The Witch’. Nothing against this Sabrina, just didn’t want ‘The Witch’ tagged on the name.

Boxofpinot · 23/11/2020 17:07

My son was going to be called Jordan Tyler 😂😂😂 my daughter was going to be Tara, hadn't got as far as her middle name though, then when I was a teenager I loved Courtney Morgan for a girl 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
I know have a son and 2 daughters, and none of those names!!

Ellmau · 23/11/2020 23:05

Jordan for a boy. Katie Price ruined it.
