Tristan or Charlie?

Baby is coming tomorrow and our shortlist is
Tristan James or Charlie James..
We can't decide at all and keep swinging between the two... don't know how to add a vote in but would love some opinions

Tristan. (Charlie is a bit babyish/nicknamey)

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 17/11/2020 17:27

Tristan is lovely and classic
Agree Charlie is a bit babyish and very common

Mysa74 · 17/11/2020 17:28

Charlie is nice but I love Tristan!

fruitpastille · 17/11/2020 17:32

Tristan sounds much posher. Depends if you like that or not? I'm not keen personally.

I don't find Charlie babyish but it's definitely more common.

ILovemyCatsSoSoMuch · 17/11/2020 17:34

I vote for Tristan.

Plenty of Charlies already.

Tristan and Iseut.

FippertyGibbett · 17/11/2020 17:35

Tristan, love it,

Twickerhun · 17/11/2020 17:37

I’d go Tristan because the only Charlie’s I know are girls and I think some boys might struggle with that?

Toddlerteaplease · 17/11/2020 17:37

Love Tristan.

TheDetectiveBadge · 17/11/2020 17:39

Tristan.

polkadotpixie · 17/11/2020 17:40

Charlie. Tristan just isn't very nice to my ears

AliMonkey · 17/11/2020 17:43

Definitely not Tristan unless you want to give the impression you are posh or trying to be. (I say this as someone very solidly middle class but whose DD is told by friends we are posh due to expensive house/car etc and I am at least glad we didn’t add to that impression by giving her a posh name).

Charlie is a good normal name so would choose that.

MrsEricBana · 17/11/2020 17:46

Prefer Charlie by miles. Cant see how it can be wrong at any age. Dd has a friend called Tristan and everyone including his family calls him Tris, which I don't love.

addler · 17/11/2020 17:47

I love Tristan. It was on my list but DP doesn't like it.

lockdownbreakdown · 17/11/2020 17:52

Tristan means sadness but the world is currently over run with Charlie's. How about Charles? Or Tristram?

FluffyEggsontoast · 17/11/2020 18:05

I love Tristan
Both nice though

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/11/2020 18:36

I love Charlie but only as a nn for the classic Charles, so if you are using it on it's own then I would pick Tristan.

LadySlipper · 17/11/2020 18:49

Tristan. Love it.

emmathedilemma · 17/11/2020 18:52

Wait and see which he looks like?

Tristan.

missmouse101 · 17/11/2020 19:05

Tristan is lovely. Charlie is boring and a nickname.

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2020 19:08

I like Tristan, so that's my vote.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 17/11/2020 19:13

Tristan doesn’t mean ‘sad’. It’s an understandable connection given how close it is to modern French ‘tristesse’ but it is a much older name meaning something more like ‘noisy’.

Excellent explanation here.

StripyTigerTail · 17/11/2020 19:36

Tristan is nice. A former study colleague of mine did her PhD on Tristan and Isolde...don't ask me what it's all about though Grin.

Charlie is cute. A sort of cheeky chappy type name, quite well used circa 2000 - 2010. There are so many 10ish yo kids round where I live called Charlie and Harry. That said, there are none in my 5yo's year at school, so you would probably avoid him being one of several in a class.

Neither name is 100% to my taste, but it isn't my baby. On balance, I'd go with Tristan. I think it's got a touch more class. But neither name is bad. Can't go too wrong with either choice.

Good luck tomorrow!

MillicentMartha · 17/11/2020 19:37

Charlie. Tristan sounds a bit ‘wet’ to me, in the Walter and Timmy vein.
