Tristan or Charlie?

Baby is coming tomorrow and our shortlist is
Tristan James or Charlie James..
We can't decide at all and keep swinging between the two... don't know how to add a vote in but would love some opinions

OP are you watching Made in Chelsea?! Tristan all the way, I love the name (though I prefer the Cornish spelling of Trystan). Charlie is not a real name, but a nickname. Tristan is strong and underused.

Chilldonaldchill · 17/11/2020 19:39

I only know 3 Tristans but all of them epitomise the very opposite of posh. However I know I'm in a minority on here.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/11/2020 19:41

Charlie.

Really don’t like Tristan.

ILoveYoga · 17/11/2020 19:43

Ooh Tristan sounds lovely. Charlie is so over used

Nell96 · 17/11/2020 19:58

On balance, Tristan. Not actually keen on the name - half of me thinks it sounds too posh and the other half thinks it sounds the exact opposite. However, I like it's celtic origins and 'Tristan and Isolde' association. Have you considered Kieran? Charlie is a cute name, but more of a nickname and also very popular. I'd rather have something a bit different. Best of luck for tomorrow.

Oneandabean · 17/11/2020 20:38

Tristan is better but then I love welsh names. Charlie is so popular with girls and boys it’s a bit boring.
I don’t see it as posh, if anything Charlie is more posh to me.

DamsonJamFan · 17/11/2020 22:05

Tristan or even better Tristram

HollyBen · 17/11/2020 22:12

Charlie gets my vote. There may be lots of them but I really don't like Tristan

sofiathe2nd · 17/11/2020 22:15

I have a Tristan.. so Tristan. He’s only tiny but thus far not wet or posh etc

MercyBodle · 17/11/2020 22:43

While I quite like Charlie I find Tristan much more interesting and versatile - so, Tristan.

nildesparandum · 17/11/2020 23:47

here I live Charlie is slang for penis.

Firebird83 · 17/11/2020 23:48

Tristan. Charlie is overdone.

cloverbug · 18/11/2020 06:54

Charlie.
I've always disliked the name Tristan, not sure if it's just me but it sounds like someone who would be quite rough.

August20 · 18/11/2020 08:26

I love Tristan!

Charlie's cute but I only like it as a nickname.

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2020 09:10

Charlie.

LemonBreeland · 18/11/2020 09:16

Charlie. Tristan is either 'wet' or a twatty MP

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2020 14:43

Tristan! Love it.

MimiDaisy11 · 18/11/2020 14:47

Charlie.

Tristan seems so posh for me. I like names which don't give away class.

Ismellphantoms · 18/11/2020 15:02

Tristan. It's not too posh. Charlie is a nickname. Name him Charles if you prefer Charlie.

NatalieH2220 · 18/11/2020 15:07

Definitely Charlie!

CakeRattleandRoll · 18/11/2020 17:21

Tristan. I find the whole 'posh' names thing baffling.

Pemba · 18/11/2020 17:45

Tristan is such a wussy name. I think of a spoiled Victorian little boy wearing velvet knickerbockers and a lace collar.

Charlie is a nice cheerful name, fine for an adult and cute for a little one. I am normally one for 'put the full name on the birth certificate' but Charles has a different vibe somehow and of course always makes me think of the Prince of Wales (not a fan).

TristansMom · 18/11/2020 17:54

When I chose my son's name, omg, it was not popular on MN. People despaired. Somewhere between prissy posh & ultrachav. If such a space exists. DS is unique & no description here fits him. I'd say of the other Tristan's we've met... one was likely to become chav. His mother had a serious lack of teeth & commitment to being a parent. None of them posh.

Charlie is fine too. Your child will make his name his own.

Except... not Tristram. That one is a tongue twister. I can hear it, but I can't say it.

MikeUniformMike · 18/11/2020 18:13

I know two Tristans. Neither is posh or a wuss.

Orphlids · 18/11/2020 19:08

Tristan! It’s just so wonderful. Tristan has been depicted for hundreds of years in art, literature and music. It’s a heavyweight name. One of the most famously romantic names. When I hear the name Tristan, I immediately hear the stirring of Wagner’s opera, one of the most erotic and significant pieces of music ever composed.

I’m afraid to say when I hear the name Charlie, I barely even register it. There are so many of them, and it’s dull. Tristan is more daring!

Good luck tomorrow, hope everything goes smoothly.
