Is Ali a boy or a girl's name?

As a name in its own right or as a shortening for Alistair, boy.

As a shortening for Alison, girl.

doctorhamster · 15/11/2020 09:09

It depends what it's short for, surely? I know two who are Alistairs and one who is Alison.

ThistleWitch · 15/11/2020 09:09

Both

OwlOne · 15/11/2020 09:10

yeh both

ApolloandDaphne · 15/11/2020 09:10

I have known both female and male Ali's.

RishiMcRichface · 15/11/2020 09:11

I 'd say it's most common as a shortening for Alison but my friend does get a few people online thinking it's the Muslim Ali, like Mohammed Ali.

HeronLanyon · 15/11/2020 09:16

No muslim? Both. But I know many more women with that short form. (Alexandra/Alice)
Most men Alex rather than Ali. So for me more a woman’s name.

Muslim ? Much more a mans name in my experience using the family name as forename in place of Muhammad (and other spellings).

Takethewinefromtheswine · 15/11/2020 09:33

It's a Muslim name and used for boys.
It is a diminutive for Alison or Alistair.

Didn't you ask this a few days ago?

CodenameVillanelle · 15/11/2020 09:37

It's a shorter name used by both boys and girls in the U.K. but also a Muslim boys name

starsinyourpies · 15/11/2020 12:38

Hi know it also as short for Alexandra.

RomillyTheRabbit · 15/11/2020 13:36

Both!

Quizeerascal · 15/11/2020 13:41

Its a Muslim boys name but could also be short for various boy or girl names, Alistair, Alison, Alexander, Alexandra, Alice, Alexa etc. I like it in all is various forms :)

CaffiSaliMali · 15/11/2020 14:23

Both - it's a common short form of names like Alistair, Alice and Alison. I know an Alicia and an Alistair who both go by Ali. I also know several women who use the Ally spelling.

It's also a muslim boys name.
