Esme - spelling and pronunciation

BatKat · 14/11/2020 13:41

How would say pronounce Esme? Es-mee, Es-may or something else?

We are considering the name for our next baby but want to make sure we have the best spelling for how we would say it.

Thanks 😊

I’d say Ez-may

HoppingPavlova · 14/11/2020 13:49

Would pronounce it Ezmay

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/11/2020 13:51

Would spell it as you have spelt it and pronounce it ez-may. Lovely name btw

Ickabog · 14/11/2020 13:52

I'd also pronounce it as Ez - May.

halcyondays · 14/11/2020 13:52

Es-mee

RosesinGranGransgarden · 14/11/2020 13:53

I noticed in Peaky Blinders they said Ez-er-May. It’s a lovely name and middle name for dd.

PaperTowels · 14/11/2020 13:54

Ez-may

How else would you spell it? Confused

FippertyGibbett · 14/11/2020 13:57

Ez-may

goldenharvest · 14/11/2020 14:00

ezmay

Tavannach · 14/11/2020 14:01

Ez-may.

Longwhiskers14 · 14/11/2020 14:03

Girl at my school with the name Esme pronounced it Ez-mee.

ShowOfHands · 14/11/2020 14:03

I pronounce it how the parents tell me. I know an ezmay, an ezmee and an esmee. All have the Esme spelling. That's how to spell it. Don't change it or start sticking accents in it.

InTheLongGrass · 14/11/2020 14:04

Ez-me, but totally accepting if you wanted Ez-may, and would try to remember.

By spelling to you mean wether to add the accent? Imo, letters that arent standard in English usage cause issues on some English forms.

AnythingLegalConsidered · 14/11/2020 14:07

Ez-may, but I don’t think it’s too big a deal if people say Ez-mee - you need to be resigned to the fact that it’s going to happen and not let it annoy you.

Lovely name. I’m not sure how well it would travel though?

PuppyMonkey · 14/11/2020 14:08

I have an Esme who is Ez-mee. I don’t like Ez-may at all and she tells people off when they say it like that.

There are about 60 million threads on this where it’s split about 50/50 if you search the MN archive. Grin

Vacummingagain · 14/11/2020 14:09

I have one! We love her name and it really suits her. It’s spelled Esme - it’s generally pronounced Ez-may. We’re in the north east to the accent here leans to that pronunciation anyway, but family members in other parts of the country lean more towards Ez-me (like the end of Amy).

She’ll answer to any of it Grin

Vacummingagain · 14/11/2020 14:09

*so the accent here

DepuisToujours · 14/11/2020 14:11

Ez-mee

@HoppingPavlova

Would pronounce it Ezmay
Same here
Sara2000 · 14/11/2020 14:14

Ez may.

It's nice name.

june2007 · 14/11/2020 14:19

Ez-may is how I would say it. Think I prefer the name it comes from Esmerelda.

Oneandabean · 14/11/2020 14:35

Ez-may, I didn’t realise there was a different way of saying it until I came on here. There’s a lot in my daughters school all Ez-may. Spellings differ a bit though

SpacePug · 14/11/2020 14:38

Ezmay

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 14/11/2020 16:11

I like Esme a lot (spelt the most common, traditional way - preferably with the accent when written by hand, although it is difficult to do on typical keyboards).

I would pronounce it Ez - may, which has a softer sound to me - however many do pronounce it Ez - mee and I think if you use the name you will have to be prepared to hear either and to possibly have it misspelt too.

BatKat · 14/11/2020 16:35

Thanks all this is very helpful. We prefer Ez-mee (although do also like Ez-may) and just wanted to check that I wouldn’t be spelling it wrong using Esme. I have also seen it spelt Esmae which added to my confusion!!! Thanks again
