I really like the name Lois, have done for long time but curious to see what other people think? The other issue (opinions please) is that our second name starts with an S.....
Is this a real no go or can it work?

How are you saying that and where do you live - Cymru, Wales, England, somewhere else...

bridgetreilly · 11/11/2020 10:22

Love it.

Though, admittedly, I only like the English pronunciation, two syllables, Lo - iss. I was completely taken aback the first time I met a 'Loyce' and I'm not a fan.

L4uz · 11/11/2020 10:29

I really like it and we had considered it as a middle name for our baby due in December but I couldn't shake off the fact that every time I hear it I'm reminded of Lois Griffin on Family guy 🤦🏼‍♀️

Heartofglass12345 · 11/11/2020 10:45

Cymru and wales are the same place lol
I quite like it, I've only ever heard it pronounced Lo-iss I didn't think there was another way

pinkpinecone · 11/11/2020 10:46

It's a great name

whywhywhy6 · 11/11/2020 10:46

Love it.

PinkSkyBlue · 11/11/2020 10:47

Love it, it was on my shortlist

TweeBree · 11/11/2020 10:50

Love, love, love it.

Whenever I hear the name Lois I think 'lucky bitch' 😄

Are you using the English pronunciation (low-iss) or the Welsh pronunciation (Loyce)?

I think Low-iss is the more common pronunciation.

countrybum · 11/11/2020 11:35

Thanks for your replies! I'm in England so would pronounce it LO-IS. I'm just on the fence due to surname beginning with an S. We called our DS Alexander but it has naturally become Alex, so again it does roll into the second name a bit Alex S.....

Love it. Classic, unusual and stylish.

yourestandingonmyneck · 11/11/2020 11:39

I like it as it is very simple. Not keen on the trend for very frilly names at the moment.

MotheringShites · 11/11/2020 11:39

It’s a lovely name but I would be wary of Lois with an S surname. It’s a bit hissy. My first and (maiden) surname were like this and they kind of blend in together and it’s annoying.

Divebar · 11/11/2020 11:49

I love Lois. It’s works for all ages I think. With regards the surname I think it depends on the sounds in the rest of the surname. Lois Smith sounds OK but if there were lots of other S sounds probably less good.

WhySoSensitive · 11/11/2020 11:52

I think of Lois Griffin but DJ think it’s a lovely name!

The end of my name is the same as the start of surname and I really hate it. Makes my name sound odd and mixed, since taking my husband I’ve enjoyed my name 😂

Spidey66 · 11/11/2020 11:52

I like it.

MoreDrunkThanBlessed · 11/11/2020 12:03

A girl in my family is called Lois and I love it. However she is usually called Low so bear that in mind if that could put you off!

whoami24601 · 11/11/2020 12:17

I know a Lois with an S surname and I've never even thought about it tbh.

countrybum · 11/11/2020 14:04

Super man had crossed my mind but Family Guy hadn't Grin I haven't come across a Lois in years so like that it's not overly used. Working with children you get to see lots of patterns/trends that can put you off certain names.

I adore Lois, it's on our list too 🙂

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/11/2020 17:58

Lois is okay, nothing wrong with it (it just isn't a fave). I think I prefer the sound of the similar Iris. Or the one Lois I knew (she'd be late 30's/40 now) had a sister called Anya which I love.

TheChristmasPrincess · 11/11/2020 18:00

It reminds me of the crazy mum from Malcolm in the Middle. But there’s nothing wrong with the name itself. I just have a negative association with it. It’s probably too old now for many other people to have that association.
