I'm currently pregnant and unsure of the sex.
I really like Dorothy, nn Dotty for a girl.
Dds name is Brooke, I'm unsure if the two names 'go'
Any opinions?

*Will be names after my grandma who died yesterday.

I like Dorothy (and Dotty) makes me think of Dorothy Parker who was fab

RaininSummer · 08/11/2020 16:20

Love it. My nan was a Dorothy aka Dolly.

burglarbettybaby · 08/11/2020 16:21

Beautiful. Sorry for your loss

Mumdiva99 · 08/11/2020 16:21

Lovely name. Sorry for your loss.

SpookyRhubarbYoghurt · 08/11/2020 16:22

I like Dorothy. Sorry for your loss. Thanks

LittleRa · 08/11/2020 16:23

I know a little one called Dottie, she’s about 3. Full name is Dottie. I think if I were to use it I’d do full name Dorothy, nn Dotty.

Namechange8471 · 08/11/2020 17:28

Thank you for your kind opinions.

Full name would be Dorothy.

Do it sound ok with Brooke? I can't imagine sisters called Dorothy and Brooke, that's my only concern really.

Sorry for your loss.
It's a lovely name.

burglarbettybaby · 08/11/2020 17:30

It's good with Brooke

pilates · 08/11/2020 17:31

Sorry for your loss but I’m not keen, sorry.
Maybe as a middle name it would be ok.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 08/11/2020 17:31

I don't think names have to match, but those are very very different types of name.

Dorothy doesn't have much to recommend it IMO.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 08/11/2020 17:40

I think Dorothy is a beautiful name, and goes fine with Brooke.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/11/2020 17:41

Dorothy is gorgeous. However as you do seem bothered about it matching with your DS name. I’ve got to be honest, I wouldn’t pair it with Brooke.

Brooke is quite modern sounding kind of like a surfer dude or type of name. Whereas, Dorothy is chic classic retro.
I would expect a Brooke to have a sibling named something a long the lines of
Madison. Harper. Paisley.
Sorry about the loss of your Grandad Flowers

Roselilly36 · 08/11/2020 18:15

So sorry for the loss of your grandma OP Flowers

Dorothy wouldn’t be a name I would choose, but you have a positive, family connection of course. The only Dots/Dottie’s I have know have been a nn for Charlotte.

I don’t think the names goes well together, perhaps Dorothy could be a middle name?

Good luck with your pregnancy & who knows, you may have a boy so this thread won’t be relevant.

Ellmau · 08/11/2020 18:17

ISWYM, Brooke sounds more modern, and Dorothy more traditional. I would suggest Dorothea instead, but there's a famous literary character called Dorothea Brooke, which could be awkward. Dora, maybe?

But if you like Dorothy, and want to use it to honour your late grandma, go for it.

FelicityPike · 08/11/2020 18:18

Love it!

MikeUniformMike · 08/11/2020 18:19

Sorry for your loss. Name dd Dorothy. It's lovely.

Flappingflamingo · 08/11/2020 18:22

Absolutely love it and I'm incredibly sorry for you loss. I agree, they sound completely different but I think on this occasion it really doesn't matter

alexdgr8 · 08/11/2020 18:22

Dorothy is a fine name. beautiful. gift of god.
go with it. all the best.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/11/2020 18:23

It's a lovely name, I'm so sorry you lost your grandma. Fwiw I don't think sibling names have to match. My name is very common for my generation, one syllable, simple. My sister has a four syllable, fancy and classy name. It has never been something we have thought about as sisters and nobody commented on the two different styles growing up.

Oriflamme · 08/11/2020 18:25

Dorothy is excellent (my late grandma's name too). I think it works fine with Brooke. In all kindness, I really don’t think anyone is going to care about them matching or not (and if they do, that’s their problem not yours!)

Oriflamme · 08/11/2020 18:26

Brooke and Dorothea also sounds really nice IMO, if you wanted an alternative

M0rT · 08/11/2020 18:27

I have four siblings and a range of name types among us. It doesn't really matter that our names don't match.
We were in different classes/years in school and obviously in college and work people only know you, your siblings names just don't really come up.
I like Dorothy and if you do too that's all that matters.

BingoGo · 08/11/2020 18:29

I wouldn't worry too much about matching your children's names, OP. They are individuals after all. If it's a name that you want to use, as a way to honor your grandma, then I think that by far trumps most reasons not to use it.

  1. the name has meaning to you
  2. you (/and your possible partner) like the name
  3. want to use it. Then that's all that matters.

I know a 1 month old named Dorothy, they've nicknamed her Dottie.

diplodocusinermine · 08/11/2020 18:35

A lovely name and a great way to honour your grandma. The nicknames are all fabulous but specially like Dolly. Also really like Doth which was Laurie Lee's sister's nickname in Cider with Rosie - it has a light airy sound (guess because it rhymes with moth?)
