What are your thoughts on the name April?

Me and OH both love it but my only doubt is that baby is actually due in April (unless a few days early!) - is that too cheesy or would it be weirder if they weren't born in April? We both decided we liked the name before linking it to the due date issue!

Middle name would likely be Matilda.

I think a child born in March, called April is a bit odd, April born called April is OK.

Getitrightforonce · 07/11/2020 11:35

I think it’s beautiful and unusual without being ‘out there’!

Throughabushbackwards · 07/11/2020 11:39

Lovely name.

unicornparty · 07/11/2020 11:39

I automatically think of April Jones.

WildCherryBlossom · 07/11/2020 11:42

I think it's a pretty name. I have a friend called April who is not born in April and I sort of wish she were. But maybe I'm being too literal. My grandmother had several friends called June who weren't born in June. I think it was just ever so slightly more chic than Joan in her era,

April Matilda works well as a name.

Ltay2 · 07/11/2020 11:44

I think there's a strong chance of being born in April. My due date is the 10th so unless quite a bit early then I think we're safe with assuming that for now, but I guess we would cross that bridge when it comes!

I am swaying more towards being born in April and called April is more favourable than being born in any other month as the worst they'd get would be to get asked if they were born in April and the simple answer would be yes!

So ignorant of me but just had to google who April Jones was. I'm not too bothered about associations of the name as there will be associations for any name.

It’s a pretty enough name and probably strong enough to use as a stand alone name without any reference to the month.

It might be a bit odd if she weren’t born in April (particularly if she just missed the month, would be stranger for a March or May baby to be called April IMO) but people might also say “oh April, born in April, how clever 🙄” as though it’s really unoriginal.

I love the name Matilda. Whilst I don’t dislike the combo something sounds off when I say it aloud. It doesn’t flow quite right. I think Matilda April works a little better personally and you wouldn’t have all the questions about being born in April because most people don’t ask about each other’s middle names.

MercyBodle · 07/11/2020 12:20

Lovely name, and it doesn't matter what month she is born in. Lovely with Matilda too.

Flymetothestars · 07/11/2020 13:02

April is lovely
I know a couple of people called June, Winter and Summer - highly doubt any of those names signify when they were born

Queenoftheashes · 07/11/2020 13:07

April is cute, never heard of April Jones.

youarecapable · 07/11/2020 13:08

April is a sprightly, sweet name.
It's 250th on the name charts so she'll likely be the only one in her yr group... maybe even school.

Fine to use it for a kid born in April of course. Although maybe a bit predictable.

user495275 · 07/11/2020 13:08

April Matilda is a really nice combination, even better with the fact she's actually due in April. I see people on here calling August born babies Winter and such like. I've always thought it's strange.

I didn't automatically think of April Jones either.

YoniAndGuy · 07/11/2020 13:28

Sorry I did automatically think of April Jones.

I don't like it as a name - it's a bit wet really. Not much to it. Also, I can't help thinking it's almost more naff if you're an April born in April.

Nickname? Ape?

Much, much prefer Matilda.

Sometimesonly · 07/11/2020 13:35

I like it.

Antonin · 07/11/2020 13:37

You could go for the less predictable Avril

user1493494961 · 07/11/2020 18:44

I've never liked the name April, I can't understand the Mumsnet love for it, but Matilda is lovely.

Ltay2 · 07/11/2020 19:00

That's odd I feel like I see Matilda mentioned a lot on MN but never seen April discussed!

Definitely prefer April to Matilda at the moment though for first name.

We don't find out the sex until Monday so could all be unnecessary worries 😂

Love the name. Wouldn't matter which month they were born in. June is a common name and I never wonder when they were born.

SocialBees · 07/11/2020 19:06

April is a lovely name. Personally I'd expect a girl named April to be born in April.

HotGlueGun · 07/11/2020 19:07

It's lovely.

MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2020 19:09

nn Ape.

OhTheRoses · 07/11/2020 19:12

Wonders if all the little Mays, Maes, Mais are born in May?

Ltay2 · 07/11/2020 19:22

Honestly not bothered about nicknames, nicknames can come from anything and Ape / Apes would just be seen as her nickname and not necessarily linked to anything else if that was what it ended up as. Plenty of other names have weird shortenings too I suppose.

I don't like the potential shortenings of Matilda at all, Mat, Mattie, Tilly, Tilda, whatever anybody else decides to come up with. Tbh would prefer April being shortened to Ape as at least there's only really that one possible outcome!

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2020 19:25

I know an April and AFAIK nobody calls her Ape.

finallychangedmyusername · 07/11/2020 19:29

April Matilda is really, really lovely, irrespective of her birth month IMHO.
