How popular is Ivy?

I keep seeing people say ivy is really popular now which was putting me off but I don’t actually know of any in my DD school or anyone with an Ivy.

I know one Ivy aged 70 and one Ivy aged 1.

finallychangedmyusername · 29/10/2020 20:49

I've never met one.

Changethetoner · 29/10/2020 20:56

I never met one either. Only seen the Ivy on tv (Coronation Street) years ago.

Oneandabean · 29/10/2020 21:05

I’m wondering if it’s a name that gets mentioned a lot but rarely actually used

Quite popular in my area (SE). One in each of my children’s class ( yr 4 and yr 6) and then a while ago it seemed to get more popular, several babies I heard of being named it. They are probably aged between 2-4 now, I can think of at least 4 off the top of my head. Not heard of any new babies called it recently though. I loved it when I first heard it being used again, not so keen on some of the people who used it in recent years though so it’s put me off a bit.

Squeakerfoot · 29/10/2020 21:25

I don't know any.

TweeBree · 29/10/2020 21:30

I know of 3. One is an adult.

SaffieSoph · 29/10/2020 21:31

I’m SE and I know of three all under three.

TweeBree · 29/10/2020 21:32

This site says it's 14th in the UK: www.ukbabynames.com/girls/ivy

floofycroissant · 29/10/2020 22:02

Never met one. Gorgeous name

Oneandabean · 29/10/2020 22:02

Maybe it’s regional, I’m West Midlands. My county had 14 babies named ivy last year apparently and it’s quite a large county so not too bad

Ivy ranked 12 in England and Wales in 2019, with over 2000 babies being given that name:

names.darkgreener.com/#ivy

Because there is such a wide range of names being used that the moment, that's still less than 1 per cent of the total of all babies registered in England & Wales last year.

peakotter · 29/10/2020 22:12

I know 2 or 3, all preschool. There are more names than there used to be, so top 20 doesn’t mean loads of babies.

However, people do choose similar names if they have similar backgrounds. I see loads of duplicate names at school, but even more among friendship groups or at clubs. My two ds’s both have 2 best friends with the same name. If some of your friends’ kids, or your DDs friends, have old fashioned names then I wouldn’t be surprised if your dd2 knew another Ivy.

yawnsvillex · 29/10/2020 22:23

I know 2 under 7

SpeccyLime · 29/10/2020 23:02

Just anecdotally, it seems popular to me. I know three baby Ivys born in the last 4 years. But I might just be in an Ivy hotspot!

It’s very pretty - if it is becoming popular I totally understand why.

Firebird83 · 29/10/2020 23:02

I know two toddlers called Ivy

TabithaMeow · 30/10/2020 03:23

I know of 3 baby Ivys

Ghosts2020 · 30/10/2020 03:38

It's becoming more popular, I know a few people with older children with the name and one elderly person, it was my top name and my cousin stole it over lock down and now I suddenly see it everywhere

VenusClapTrap · 30/10/2020 11:38

None in our local primary. I don’t know any at all.

Terralee · 30/10/2020 11:48

In 2000 I worked in a care home & there were 2 Ivys, lovely ladies who would've been born in the 1910s approx.

So Ivy to me is a very old fashioned name.
But it's nice.

I haven't met any young Ivys.

Whatsyourflava · 30/10/2020 12:53

I don't know any

Cbeebiesrehab · 30/10/2020 13:51

It’s ranked 12th so that suggests it’s pretty popular.
I personally know two.

diddlediddle · 30/10/2020 18:53

Not only is it quite common since it's at #12 but it's also raced up the charts in the last couple of years, meaning it will seem more trendy/popular/zeitgeisty than names that are perennially popular, like Sophie.

MikeUniformMike · 30/10/2020 19:03

There are so many similar names like Evie, Isla etc that it seems nothingy. I don't like it.

StrawberriCream · 30/10/2020 19:06

I have an Ivy, she's nearly 6, we have only met a few others all either a few years younger or old ladies
