Thoughts on Robert?

To go with brother Samuel. Would use Robbie as the nickname when baby/toddler, then Rob as a cool teenage nickname when he’s big and hulking over Bob/Bobby

Was one of the boy names my list (many years ago!) Though preferred Bertie as a nn, I feared Bob would stick.

LRHRN · 26/10/2020 08:53

Is Robert a family name? I'd be inclined to have Robert on his birth certificate and call him Bobby or Bertie. As he gets older he may not/or other people may not chose the names you have in mind.

MikeUniformMike · 26/10/2020 09:10

Fine. Prefer Rob or Robbie as nn. I don't like Bertie.

ProfessorPlumInTheLibrary · 26/10/2020 09:51

Love Robert. An underused classic in my opinion. I also prefer Rob or Robbie to Bob etc, and in my experience those are the nicknames that younger Roberts usually go by.

I think you may have found the holy grail of names...

Easy to spell
Easy to pronounce
Sounds nice
No unpleasant links
Outside the top 100

I love Robert too - it's a classic name but never feels 'old' or tied too strongly with a particular period. And there's a good selection of diminutives (I like Robin).

unmarkedbythat · 26/10/2020 10:00

Absolutely love. It's my third son's middle name but was very nearly his first and if it had been we would have called him Robbie day to day.

midsomermurderess · 26/10/2020 10:27

It's a sound name. Despite all the fads that come and go, names like this will always stand the test of time.

Pammy39 · 26/10/2020 10:40

Not sure about Robert but Rob sounds nice.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 26/10/2020 10:50

It’s a great name. Classic but not overused, and a good nick name selection to choose from.

FatimaMunchy · 26/10/2020 10:53

Not for me. Have only known drippy ones.

tsmainsqueeze · 26/10/2020 10:56

bit bland for me .

finallychangedmyusername · 26/10/2020 11:06

I really like Robert, but the only nickname or diminutive I like is Robin.

LadyEloise · 26/10/2020 11:07

Lovely

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2020 18:50

It's nice, it reminds me of names like John - they are so classic that I can't understand why they're not more popular now. I must admit my favorite name to go with Samuel is Alexander, but Robert works well in style too and is much less common. Like previous posters the only nickname I really like for it is Robin, but Robbie's not terrible and nicknames often evolve naturally anyway.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/10/2020 18:52

Great name and love Robbie.

WishingOnACarrot · 26/10/2020 18:56

Awful. Sorry.

I've always hated it. Bit like robot.

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/10/2020 19:01

I think it's a great name. I like Robbie if it's going to be shortened. Not keen on Bob or Bobbie.

WoWsers16 · 26/10/2020 19:02

Really lovely name xxx

foxtiger · 27/10/2020 18:34

Love it and I definitely think Rob/Robbie are the best short forms.
