Names like Alexander?

yorkshirenewtoallthis · 23/10/2020 10:16

I love the name Alexander, but my it's my brother's name, and the name of my husband's dad's adult stepson.
So it feels like I can't use it as then there'd be three of them in the family 😞

Can anyone suggest any names similar to Alexander, or even just with that kind of flavour or category?
Any traditional or classic names like that, that aren't too overused?
We also like Benjamin, Nathaniel, Adrian, Jacob etc
Thankyou :-)

I have an alexander and a Daniel
I also liked Ewan, alistair and Douglas

emmathedilemma · 23/10/2020 10:27

Alistair was my first thought just from your title. I really like Daniel and Benjamin too.

You can still use Alexander if you really like it. I did and it's my brother's middle name and my grandad's name. Lots of people use family names.

I have an Alexander and his brothers name is William, which I feel has a similar vibe.

Thank you for that. I'd really love to, but I just feel odd about there being so many of them. I feel like the rest of the family would be disappointed. Such a shame!

Use it. If your brother and the other Alexander are both Alex, call the baby by the full name, or Alec or Sandy.

OverTheRubicon · 23/10/2020 11:16

Sebastian? Alastair?

Felix ior Xavier f you like an X...

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 23/10/2020 11:19

Honestly, I don't think you should let the opinions of other family members influence you. It's your baby and if you really did have your heart set on a specific name, it would be such a shame to deny yourself what you really want. You won't ever please everyone anyway, so you might as well please yourself Wink
All our Alexander's have different versions. Grandad was Alec, son is Xander. My sister is Lexi (forgot to mention her earlier).

TheDornans · 23/10/2020 12:52

Alastair. I think it’s better spelt like that than Alistair or Alasdair (IMO).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/10/2020 15:26

I really love Nathaniel of your other choices , if you aren't keen on using Alistair instead or Xander as a nickname for Alexander (I can understand though why you really want to use Alexander - it's a great name).

Other options could be fellow Greek soundalikes - Leander, Evander, Lysander.
Or other multi syllable or classic names: Samuel, Gabriel, William, Edward, Thomas, Nicholas, Zachary, Maximilian, Xavier.

babycakes1010 · 23/10/2020 15:33

Thomas
George
William
James

LittleTiger007 · 23/10/2020 15:41

I would use Alexander as a middle name or alternatively use Alexander as the first name if you love it and call the child by a nickname to avoid confusion in the family.
So he would be Xander, Alex or Alec from early on with Alexander as full name on birth certificate.

LittleTiger007 · 23/10/2020 15:42

Or Lex

I read this comment and for a second thought I'd already posted on this thread because these are my dcs names Grin.

Names I'm considering for dc3 if it's a boy are:
Edward
Samuel
Daniel
Adam
Michael
James
And now after reading a pp's list on this thread I've just added Zachary Smile.

You could also just have Alec or Xander so it's not exactly the same as your relaltives' names.

Nacomi · 23/10/2020 16:37

Honestly, if you like Alexander, please use it. Your son will also live in the outside world and if that is the name you like you should not feel you cannot give it to him. It doesn't matter what people think!

Violetparis · 23/10/2020 16:40

Francis
Patrick
Julian

MrsEricBana · 23/10/2020 16:45

Nathaniel nn Nate
Sebastian nn Seb

Alistair becomes Ally amongst my friends which I don't love on a man.

Ladyw13 · 23/10/2020 18:24

We have decided to name our son Alexander but other names on our list were Samuel, Charles, Frederick, and we also like William—but that is my brother’s name Smile

TiggeryBear · 23/10/2020 18:28

I have an Alexander William. If I have another boy; he will be called Nathaniel George. (No plans for any additional DC)

BoudicasBoudoir · 23/10/2020 19:29

My husband and my brother are both Alexander but go by different diminutives so there is no confusion.

If you love Alexander, just use it!
