Classical/trad boys names

Hey All!
Had the 20 week scan today - we’re having a boy and so thrilled!!
We’re really unsure on names - really not a fan of the trendy ones at the moment. Names which are a bit more traditional are preferred - we like things like Samuel, Nathanial etc, but would love some suggestions of others.

And/or Danish/Scandinavian, as husband is a Dane.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks :-)

Truely traditional boy names in the UK I would say are classic names that have never been out of the top 100 (in the last 100 or so years) which if I remember correctly are: James, Thomas, William, Edward, Alexander, George, Charles and Harry/Henry?

Samuel and Nathaniel I really, really love but are maybe more second tier classics - Samuel had a spate of popularity here 10-20 years ago but hasn't always been steadily popular, where as Nathaniel has not been used as much in the UK as in other countries (Nathan used to be more popular here).

Obvious similar names to Samuel and Nathaniel in feel (and that you've probably already considered!) are Michael, Daniel and Gabriel.

Scandi/Danish boys names I like are Elias, Soren, Mads, Mathias/ Matteus, Erik and Stellan but the first four probably wouldn't be pronounced correctly in the UK. I think Alexander and Samuel work pretty well in most countries though and are lovely names.

John
Edmund
Terence
Laurence
Alistair
Hugh
Robert
Sidney
Francis

(Just going through names in my family tree - I had a great uncle Nathaniel and these were first and middle names of his brothers and cousins)

I like Samuel. Out of the classic names it has a particularly friendly feel to me! Nathaniel is more unusual and very nice.

Other ideas:
Nicholas
Patrick
Alexander
William
Adam
Thomas
Edmund
Matthew
Daniel
Benedict
Gabriel

Out of Danish names, I really like Emil. I also know a Magnus and a Matthias. I don't know how popular these are for babies in Denmark but they are both striking and sound nice to my non-Danish ears.

We had similar parameters and are naming our son Alexander with Charles as the middle most likely, but plan to use the nn Anders as my husband is half Swedish and that was our compromise of trad/classic name and Scandinavian nameSmile We also thought about Frederick and Charles. Samuel as well but my husband wasn’t as much a fan. And he liked Lucas but I feel it’s quite trendy these days. Also Phillip might work for you?

missmouse101 · 23/10/2020 19:26

Adam?

CorianderLord · 23/10/2020 20:42

Adam, Aleksander (works in both Danish and English), Caspar, Kennet (Handsome One).
