Hi everyone :)

Baby girl is due in few months and husband and myself have struggled choosing a name
The only name we love is Alaia - pronounced as (a-lay-ah) but I’m worried people will pronounce as (a-lie-a)

How would you pronounce it ?

Thank you Smile

A-Lay-Ah, I think it's a lovely name Smile

piggie88 · 21/10/2020 12:33

A-lay-ah, I love it too!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 21/10/2020 12:34

I’ve only ever heard it as “a liar”

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 21/10/2020 12:34

Without anyone to tell me, I would say A-lie-ah .

There will be a lifetime of spelling it out. And in the original, is there not a double dot over the i ?

Sounds nice though.

Felicity88 · 21/10/2020 12:36

I would say it with Lay in the middle.
There is a popular fashion brand called Alaïa. Also there is a YouTube influencer with a baby called Alaia.Smile

Felicity88 · 21/10/2020 12:37

It is an Arabic name.

ShowOfHands · 21/10/2020 12:39

I'd ask the child/parents how to pronounce. Most people who are in the child's life will learn pretty quickly.

joeysapple · 21/10/2020 12:40

A-liar

haba · 21/10/2020 12:41

A Liar.
As far as I know that's how the fashion label is pronounced.
If you want people to say Alaya, then maybe spell Alaya?

GivenchyDahhling · 21/10/2020 12:46

Cher: ‘You don’t understand. This is an Alaia.’

Mugger: ‘An a whatta?’

Cher: ‘An Alaia. It’s like a totally important designer.’

Felicity88 · 21/10/2020 12:49

I would also use Alaya instead of Alaia because of the brand and pronunciation confusion. It just makes more sense.

QueenBlueberries · 21/10/2020 12:54

Don't like the name at all. It will constantly be pronounced wrong.

IHaveAGreyLamp · 21/10/2020 12:56

Someone I know has this name, she pronounces it A-Lee-Ah

OHappyDay · 21/10/2020 12:57

I would initially pronounce it as a-lie-a
But then would second guess myself and say a-lay-a

fortran · 21/10/2020 13:07

She'll get sick of having to spell it out for people and explain the pronunciation. Some people will argue back about how it is meant to be pronounced. I'm sure it's a nice enough name, but it'll be an irritation for her as she goes through life.

Dani2107 · 21/10/2020 13:21

Thank you everyone . I agree it would be annoying to keep pronouncing it .. alaya could work but somehow I don’t think it looks as nice . Names are hard ! The only other name I like is Pia wish hubby would get on board !

Alaya looks lovely Smile if you both love Alaia it may be worth considering Alaya.
Pia is very sweet I had a hindu friend at school called Pia.
Do you like Tia?

Changethetoner · 21/10/2020 13:35

Ah-lie-Ah

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 21/10/2020 13:47

I'd say 'Ah-lay-ah'.

I have a cousin called Piia (we're from Finland originally), the Finnish double 'I' means the sound is slightly longer, like 'Peeee-ah', but Pia is a sweet, simple name.

MiddleClassMother · 21/10/2020 14:00

My friends daughter is Alaia and is pronounced A-lee-ah. Took me a while because I would normally say A-lay-ah

Felicity88 · 21/10/2020 14:05

Have you considered
Ayla or Aaliyah?

Davespecifico · 21/10/2020 14:08

A liar

TheDogsMother · 21/10/2020 14:08

The only one I know is an Al-ee-ah

1940s · 21/10/2020 14:22

Ah-liar

However it's very rare I'd only ever see a name written down before I was introduced to it. Plus once introduced it would be super easy to remember. If you like it go for it.

sausagedoglove · 21/10/2020 14:27

A-lie-a like the fashion brand
