What else could they be short for?

My partner and I like a few names in their shortened versions but not the obvious names that they'd be short for. Any ideas of other names they could be nicknames for?

Katie (not Katherine)

Lexi and Alex (not Alexandra or Alexa)

Kit (not Christopher)

If you like the short version then use that

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/10/2020 21:08

All of those names stand alone fine

Just use one of them.

Caitlin, Katrina/Catriona, Kathleen

Alexis

Christian, Kester

SE13Mummy · 17/10/2020 21:16

Katrina, Kathleen, Caitlin, Katya, Catalina, Kate?
Alexis or Lexington?
Christian, Crispin, Kitto?

If the "real" name is not one that usually lends itself to that nickname then other people (especially once they get to school) will probably not use the nickname you want.

Katie - katerina, Kathleen, Katrina,

Lexi/Alex - Alexandrina, Alexia, Alexis,

Kit - kitty, Caitlin, Katrina, Katherine

Kit - Keaton, Atticus, Kristin,

Katie, Alex and Kit are imo all stand-alone names now. And I am not a fan of giving shortened versions of names or nicknames as names. But if I met a Katie, Alex or Kit I wouldn't presume they had a longer name - they might but they might not.

Lexi, I would presume she was called Alexandra tbh but wouldn't be shocked if she said it was simply Lexi (I will say I like your other names but not this one)

Katie (not Katherine) - long for Kate, short for Kathleen, Katrina, Katelyn(?), Kathmandu

Lexi and Alex (not Alexandra or Alexa) - Alexis, Alexandria. I don't like Lexi, and Alex seems to be more popular as a boy's name nowadays

Kit (not Christopher) - Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag
Kitto, Christian, Cristobal

They're fine on their own

Katalina, Katarina, Katniss, Katianne

Alexina, Alexia

Kingston, Beckett

Creamteafatty · 18/10/2020 10:57

Katerina
Alexis
No clue.

You could use the names you like. Katie doesn't need a longer name

daisypond · 18/10/2020 11:01

Kit could be short for any Chris-type name. Christina, Christine, Kristin, Kristina, Kirsten, Christian etc.

daisypond · 18/10/2020 11:03

Kirstie.

2tired2bewitty · 18/10/2020 11:03

I know both a Lexi and a Katie who do not have longer names.

mistermagpie · 18/10/2020 11:07

I know all three and they are just their names, not a shortening. I think you would be fine to use them as they are.

That said, I have a shortening of a proper name (like Lizzie for Elizabeth) and I'm glad that the proper name is on my bc. Nobody ever calls me that, they never have, but I do use it for formal things because I think the shortening is a bit twee and young sounding and I don't really want it on my passport/degree certificates etc.
