Both names are unisex and I love them for both a boy or girl. What are your thoughts and which do you prefer?

I prefer River and I prefer it for a girl.

MuserOwl · 17/10/2020 11:24

Well, I prefer River. But you can't use both.
You say ''river and rio''

Some nouns do work as names imo

River, Blue, Red, Tuesday!

You have to be careful though. Run it past a lot of people because it might work, it might sound idiotic and it is a fine line.

YellowishZebra · 17/10/2020 11:25

I think Rio is a name and River is a word. (Yes I know Rio means river in Spanish but it isn't a word in English)
I consider Rio a boy's name. As I don't think River sounds like a name I suppose it is one of those that would become a name once you've said it for a while so could be either.

Toebarb · 17/10/2020 11:26

I prefer River for a girl and Rio if it's a boy.

june2007 · 17/10/2020 11:26

I like both but not together

Raei · 17/10/2020 11:27

@MuserOwl Certainly wouldn't use both. Not only do they sound similar but Rio actually means River. Grin

I think River is unisex, but Rio would always assume Rio was a boy.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 17/10/2020 11:29

Oh no, you definitely can't use both! People will think you have a particular obsession with rivers!

Raei · 17/10/2020 11:31

@KnightsofColumbusThatHurt
It will be one or the other, definitely not both. Smile

I think if you use Rio for a girl she’ll get the song sung at her a lot by people of the older generation. River probably better for a girl.

ZebraKid71 · 17/10/2020 11:34

I much prefer river but it really depends on your surname and whether it works.

june2007 · 17/10/2020 11:39

I always think of River as a boy but have worked with a girl and a boy called rio.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 17/10/2020 13:06

River is riveting and Rio is riolly beautiful

I have never considered River for a girl and I like it! I can only picture Rio on a boy though.

Raei · 17/10/2020 13:25

@Garcellesaidwhaaat
I thought people would think Rio was more a girls name due to the song but seems it's the other way around. Thank you! Smile

I prefer both as boy's names. I know boy and girl Rivers and still feel that way- I don't know any Rios but I'd assume boy if I heard it.

Jocasta2018 · 17/10/2020 13:49

To me Rio will always be a girl's name & River a boy's name!
(That gives you some idea of my age....)

Mylittlepony374 · 17/10/2020 13:50

Rio= boy. River = Unisex. I love them both. Unfortunately my husband didn't ....

Oneandabean · 17/10/2020 15:01

Rio is definitely a girls name to me, although the only one I knew is now late 30s.
River can be unisex but I sway more towards boy tbh.

2020hasbeenbloodyawful · 17/10/2020 15:03

I know a woman who has a little boy called Rio and he's gorgeous.

River makes me think of River Phoenix and he was fab. His brother has just named their little boy after him.

They're both lovely names and quite 'out there' without being too out there.

micc · 17/10/2020 15:04

I prefer River, but Rio is nice. I know a Rhiannon that goes by Rio.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/10/2020 15:07

I'm reminded of the Duran Duran song Rio. The lyrics refer to Rio as being female but in Spanish the word Rio is masculine.

GlitchStitch · 17/10/2020 15:08

They are both boy's names to me- Rio Ferdinand and River Phoenix. Both are nice, I prefer River though.

MikeUniformMike · 17/10/2020 15:42

I'm not keen on either, as celebrity-inspired, but would think of them as dboys' names - Mr Phoenix and Mr Ferdinand

StellaGib · 17/10/2020 15:44

I like River for a boy or girl.

Rio sounds a bit trashy to me to be honest. River is quite hippy.

MrsGrindah · 17/10/2020 15:50

Does it matter? You clearly want a different from usual name so how can they really be either a boys or girls name?
