Is Jade an outdated name? I love it but I've not heard it being used in years

I don’t think it was ever common enough to be outdated. I know one in her 30s.
If you like it, go for it.

IndieRo · 14/10/2020 16:02

My sister is in her 30s and is called Jade, it got quite common for a while but don't hear of many babies being called Jade now. I do like the name for what it's worth.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 14/10/2020 16:05

It's definitely not in the Top 100 and has actually dropped in popularity over the years from 19th in 1996 to 519th in 2019. Jaida and Jada are even more unpopular.

The name isn't my cup of tea but I find it ok. Don't like the look of jade stone though. I prefer Ruby, Amber, Ivory, Emerald as names.

Garcellesaidwhaaat · 14/10/2020 16:05

Ok maybe not Ivory.

BinkyBoinky · 14/10/2020 16:06

Jade Goody's ruined Jade for me.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/10/2020 16:07

I've always like the name Jade. I knew one in uni and she was lovely.

Trevorina · 14/10/2020 16:09

It's a bit 90s for me but it's more interesting than another Ava/Isla/Olivia

Greenteandchives · 14/10/2020 16:11

To me Jade is always Jane with a bad cold.

LadyCatStark · 14/10/2020 16:12

It’s definitely very 90s but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

DrDetriment · 14/10/2020 16:15

Bit chavvy I'm afraid.

Pudding01 · 14/10/2020 16:19

Whilst it is a pretty name, I have never met a nice (or classy) Jade... Shame really

Firebird83 · 14/10/2020 19:44

Agree with @DrDetriment

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 19:45

I think it was nice when I'd only ever heard of one (her dad doesn't gather any moss) but it's too linked to big brother for me.

WildCherryBlossom · 14/10/2020 20:27

Yup agree with @MikeUniformMike Jade Jagger has quite a ring to it. And I like the idea of it as the stone is so pretty. But it does feel a little 90s. I think of Jade Goody before Jade Jagger.

But then my DDs are dressing like All Saints and listening to Spice Girls so perhaps we are in full on 90s revival...

user1493494961 · 14/10/2020 20:27

Also agree with DrDetriment.

jadeivf · 14/10/2020 21:10

I'm 21 and my name's jade I haven't heard of anyone called jade growing up but in high school there were 5 jade's in my year but growing up and to this day I hate my name purely because I have never had a nickname🤦‍♀️ I envied everyone with nicknames

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 21:12

I like Amber but not other gemstone type names. not sure if amber is a gemstone but ukwim

JuliaJohnston · 14/10/2020 21:13

It's really not nice.

EnigmaticIcelandShopper · 14/10/2020 21:20

I hate it. It's also my name.

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2020 21:24

It's a nice enough name. Very 90s though, so I suppose dated now.

jessstan1 · 14/10/2020 22:27

I don't like the old meaning of the name so wouldn't choose it.

Early90sdecor · 14/10/2020 22:30

I think it’s lovely - I remember when I was about 5 or 6 there was a Jade in my ballet class and it seemed so cool compared to the Katies and Victorias and Sarahs there.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 15/10/2020 00:36

Feels very dated. Muxh along the same lines as 90s names like Chelsea, Britney, Shannon, Courtney and Madison. None of which feel particularly classy to me. I knew a Jade with a sister called Coral.

StormBaby · 15/10/2020 00:38

It’s normally touted as a chavvy lower class name on MN. Its usually up there on the most hated name lists.

jessstan1 · 15/10/2020 17:52

Yes. I remember donkey's years ago when Mick and Bianca Jagger called their daughter, 'Jade' and it was nice and pretty (though they obviously didn't look up all the meanings). Now it is hackneyed. Lots of names go that way
