Hey everyone! I was wondering what u all thought on the name Draco. I know it has the harry Potter connection but I don't really care about that and by the time I have kids I don't think harry potter will be as big. I love that it's a constellation and the meaning is dragon as I can use that for a nn. Honestly tho what are ur thoughts on it

Please dont

alexdgr8 · 12/10/2020 01:35

sounds like a household product, poss a vacuum cleaner.

Liddell · 12/10/2020 01:43

Inspired by the ubiquitous AK-47 rifle, the DRACO is a Romanian designed pistol with 7.62×39 semi automatic caliber. It provides all the power of a rifle cartridge ...

It's the name for a gun too.

RainbowMum11 · 12/10/2020 01:47

Dragon
Malfoy

I wouldn't.

Notapheasantplucker · 12/10/2020 01:47

It's terrible

UsernameNotValid · 12/10/2020 01:47

Not to my taste personally and I imagine it's one of those names that you'd feel you had to live up to. I always think with "out there" names - would I/DH be happy to introduce ourselves to someone as X or would you feel a bit daft?

Also, Harry Potter isn't going anywhere anytime soon so it'll always be associated!

TheSandman · 12/10/2020 01:48

I wouldn't.

It would be like calling your kid 'Biggles', or 'Cruella'.

AdaColeman · 12/10/2020 01:50

It will be an excellent name if are you hoping your child will have a career in the Russian mafia.

NeverHadANickname · 12/10/2020 01:52

I love Harry Potter but I wouldn't do it. I think Harry Potter is going to be around for a long time yet so will always have the association.

Ghosts2020 · 12/10/2020 01:56

I would personally, love all of the slytherin Harry Potter names, but I guess you're either quirky or not x

grapewine · 12/10/2020 02:00

Dragon as a nickname does not have positive connotations where I'm from, and the Harry Potter link would put me off as well.

HorridHamble · 12/10/2020 02:02

I think you may regret it. Reminds me of notions my friends and I had as 90s teenagers, declaring the names of our imaginary future children to be things like River, Keanu, Kurt, Beck, Kiedis...

Also, I am not sure if you realise that the first Harry Potter book was published about 25 years ago. I don’t think the series and characters are going to fade away any time soon.

MrsAvocet · 12/10/2020 02:07

Given that it is over 23 years since the first of the Harry Potter books was published and they are still best sellers I will be very surprised if they are not still very popular for many years to come. Calling a son Draco and not expecting him to have a lifetime of hearing "as in Malfoy?" would be like naming him Bilbo and then being surprised when people make comments about his feet or ask to borrow his ring. If you pick a name that is from any major work of fiction and it isn't in common usage otherwise then people are always going to relate it to the book.
Depends how you feel about that of course, but just bear in mind that it would be your son who would be putting up with the comments long after you stop hearing them, so if you do choose it I would opt for a more ordinary middle name so that he can swap to using that if he gets fed up.

SourcePlease · 12/10/2020 02:20

I know it has the harry Potter connection but I don't really care about that

It's not really you that will have to live with it though. Harry Potter isn't going anywhere, and to 99% of people that's the only place they'll ever have heard the name. He will for sure spend his entire life hearing Harry Potter jokes and comments. Why would you do that to your own child?

I had a few names on my list that might have caused annoyance to my kids in the future so I just scratched them off. There are so many good names to choose from, I can't see why anyone would pick one like that.

lovelemoncurd · 12/10/2020 02:35

Is this for real?

CodenameVillanelle · 12/10/2020 03:14

Why do you think Harry Potter won't be big when your child is growing up??

Emma16658 · 12/10/2020 03:19

I don't even know why I put that in there hp is always going to be huge I'm not able to edit the post tho

Draco, the historical figure, made laws so harsh that we still use the word draconian. Even petty thieves were executed. I wouldn't.

Wakeupalready · 12/10/2020 04:24

No.Please don't.
For all the reasons already listed.

I asked my son what he'd think when meeting someone called Draco. ( he's 17). His response was Harry Potter tragic parents. And then poor kid, he'll never live that down. So, then asked about Dragon as a nickname. He thought that was worse.

So, no x 2 from this household.

ivfbeenbusy · 12/10/2020 05:07

Awful and it makes you come across as immature that you've used a name from HP (even if you haven't)

Bowerbird5 · 12/10/2020 05:32

It would be awful.

daretodenim · 12/10/2020 06:04

Some countries have a list of names that can be used and refuse to register other names. I don't agree with that.

Well, I didn't until now.

Fionasmammy · 12/10/2020 06:11

No it's not nice.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/10/2020 06:13

Ridiculous.
It’s a name thought up as great by a very young, immature person who in 10 or so years time will look back and think ‘I wish someone had talked me out of that’.
Don’t lumber your child with such nonsense.

Chocaholic9 · 12/10/2020 06:13

Absolutely awful. Conspiracy theorists associate this name with evil aliens if I remember rightly... David Icke sort of nonsense.
