Hey everyone! I was wondering what u all thought on the name Draco. I know it has the harry Potter connection but I don't really care about that and by the time I have kids I don't think harry potter will be as big. I love that it's a constellation and the meaning is dragon as I can use that for a nn. Honestly tho what are ur thoughts on it

nope, not draco, draco malfoy

HeronLanyon · 12/10/2020 06:15

Draconian !
I think -
James Bond ‘villain’ type vibes
Large multinational conglomerate - chemicals
Gun manufacturer
All round pretty awful to my ear.

Doubleyikes · 12/10/2020 06:16

Gosh it’s not good for the reasons above.

Dracula, In Romanian Drac means devil not dragon. The word draconian means extremely cruel. There are so many good names in the world but this isn’t one of them.

Minimumstandard · 12/10/2020 06:17

Please don't do this to a child. How would you like to live your life with constant ridicule? I'm assuming your parents didn't do this to you?

FlapsInTheWind · 12/10/2020 06:18

My step daughter has a silly name. She spends so much time explaining it she is going to call herself Sally when she goes to uni next year. She is utterly done with it.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 12/10/2020 06:22

I actually like the name but yes, harry p is here to stay, so your kid will have a nightmare with it at school.

What about Albus?

CatteStreet · 12/10/2020 06:27

Rowling used it for Malfoy because it sounds like a 'villain' name. (Malfoy itself being presumably a corruption of a Latin/French word for 'evildoer'). Not a good vibe for a child, tbh.

FippertyGibbett · 12/10/2020 06:52

No, no no.

SeanCailleach · 12/10/2020 06:58

Is this a wind-up or are you very very young OP?

MrsBungle · 12/10/2020 07:02

It’s your child who’d have to live with the name. It’s truly terrible and setting them up for a lifetime of ridicule.

Notverybright · 12/10/2020 07:02

@Ghosts2020

I would personally, love all of the slytherin Harry Potter names, but I guess you're either quirky or not x
What if you’re kid isn’t quirky though. They deserve a life free of having to explain that their parents are quirky, and felt the need to express that quirkinesses in their child’s name.
FenellaMaxwell · 12/10/2020 07:05

You’re joking, right??

Minimumstandard · 12/10/2020 07:06

People will make assumptions (and not good ones) about them before they even walk into the room. They will have trouble getting people to take them seriously. Why would you do that to a child in life?

KatherineJaneway · 12/10/2020 07:07

I know it has the harry Potter connection but I don't really care about that and by the time I have kids I don't think harry potter will be as big.

Harry Potter will never go away so you are setting you child up for a lifetime of teasing and embarrassment.

KatherineJaneway · 12/10/2020 07:09

Also the Harry Potter films will be remade.

SeanCailleach · 12/10/2020 07:14

There are countries where it's a name but if you are not from there you can't get away with it. If you like the sound then

Drake

Completely different vibe

EggyPegg · 12/10/2020 07:16

Every reason has already been listed. I know a Thor. Parents loved the name and the mythology behind it but I can't take it seriously. And it's a huge name to live up to.
Considering Draco is like those who named their daughters Khaleesi when GoT was at its peak.
Buy a cat and name it Draco.

BreatheAndFocus · 12/10/2020 07:38

No - draconian, Dracula...Not a nice name.

It will also be mispronounced: Drack-o or Dray-ko.

That’s ignoring the whole HP thing.

SionnachRua · 12/10/2020 07:40

Lol. Harry Potter books are still huge with kids, they're not going away any time soon (unfortunately). It's a silly choice of name.

Shooglywheel · 12/10/2020 07:44

🍪

HeronLanyon · 12/10/2020 07:46

shoogly finally a biscuit that looks like one (ignoring the cookie element obvs) rather than looking like a flower !

NandosPeriometer · 12/10/2020 08:06

My teen son is a Harry and he gets HP references frequently. I suspect it's worse if the name is only associated with HP. People will assume that you (and later your son) like the franchise which is still going really strong- the shops are full of merchandise this Xmas

On a separate note Draco is too similar to Draconian for my likely and when your son misbehaves, people will think Draco Malloy imo

Ffsffsffsffsffs · 12/10/2020 08:16

Teacher here - I would instantly judge you (and your son) as a muppet if I saw that name on my register. I'd take a stab that you were going to be one of 'those' parents, and not believe he could do any wrong because 'teachers always think he's living up to his name'.

Please, don't.

ShatnersBaboon · 12/10/2020 08:17

As long as you're happy to accept that your child will eventually become a baddie, go for it. It's cute.

planplan · 12/10/2020 08:17

If it weren't for a Harry Potter then yes.

But there is Harry Potter, Draco was the bully.
Also, look up Drarry... your kid will have kids of slash fanfic with their name on - perfect bully material.
