Girls name: which spelling?

anonymous1234567890 · 11/10/2020 10:01

Heard this name recently but unsure of which spelling....
Indie/Indi/Indy

To add I immensely dislike India (its a country name), Indigo (its a colour) and Indiana (again a place name).

I knew someone many years ago who named their daughter Indira Violet and thought that sounded gorgeous.
But I would ideally like to use middle name Matilda.

Which spelling do you prefer? Indie/Indi/Indy
Which would sound nicer? Indie/Indi/Indy Matilda or Indira Violet?

Many thanks.

Indie Matilda is lovely.

Violet is too close to violent.

MercyBodle · 11/10/2020 11:01

Indie is my preferred spelling.

Out of your options I would choose Indira Violet with nn Indie.

I prefer Ingrid though, as another way to have Indie nn. Ingrid Matilda.

Not keen on the name but would spell it Indie. It does sound like it is short for something though. I thing the Cheff Hugh Fernly Whitingstall. has a an Indie-may. So have heard of it as a name.

@MercyBodle Sorry but Ingrid is very dowdy and old-fashioned. That is one name that shouldn't be revive. Terrible! And clearly isn't the style I'm going for!

Also, just to add I like the birth certificate name to be the one used on a day to day basis! Not into one name for birth certificate with every day nickname.

Indie.

june2007 · 11/10/2020 11:30

Op Ingrid was just a suggestion if you don,t like then fine. I quite like it. (wouldn,t use it myself mind.)

Romemarie · 11/10/2020 11:47

Indy Matilda

Pemba · 11/10/2020 11:55

Don't like it at all, but spelling should be Indie. Just sounds like an adjective, for instance indie rock.

Indira is OK.

anonymous1234567890 · 11/10/2020 11:57

Thank you all. The other name we are quite fond of is Tiana (obviously wouldn't use Matilda with that). But Tiana is a Disney princess. Do you think that makes the name less serious?

Indira is gorgeous, Indie reminds me of Indiana Jones or the music, but that doesn't matter. If you like it that's the way I'd spell it.

Anotheronetwo · 11/10/2020 12:08

Indie is the best spelling, although I prefer Tiana.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/10/2020 12:23

It wasn't at all apparent from your previous posts that Ingrid wouldn't be to your taste. It's a good suggestion and a lovely name.

Indira is an alternative name for the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. I probably wouldn't personally use it without Indian heritage but that's just me. It's a beautiful name.

Spied · 11/10/2020 12:29

Indie Matilda

Tiana reminds me of a girl on YouTube who my DD watches constantly and who also has a range of accessoriesHmm

UsernameNotValid · 11/10/2020 12:43

@Spied that was my first association too.

OP I know an Indy and an Indie - I prefer the latter as it looks more like a name whereas the former looks like a pop culture word. Atleast in my mind that's how it works 🤔🤣

Aunty5ocial · 11/10/2020 12:57

I like Indie.
Tiana is the name of my daughter's tooth fairy

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 11/10/2020 13:05

Wow, OP. What's got your knickers in a twist? Pretty ott reaction to @MercyBodle suggesting another name. She didn't say anything rude. I actually think Ingrid is a lovely name, also not that dissimilar to Indie so you're wrong there. How are we meant to know your exact preferences to avoid offending you? Those "old fashioned" names are really in for girls at the moment.

MikeUniformMike · 11/10/2020 13:05

Indrani is pretty. I'd use nn Indi for it. It means Goddess of the sky, I think.

bringbackfonzi · 11/10/2020 13:12

Indie/indy for me just means independent as in indy music so I wouldn't use it as a full name. Definitely a nick name in my view.
Another Ingrid lover here! But Indira is also beautiful, although maybe with no Indian connection it's a bit weird to use it?
Tiana is ok.

Pudding01 · 11/10/2020 13:53

Indie Matilda is the best name out of your options.

anonymous1234567890 · 11/10/2020 14:11

@TheVeryHungryTortoise I was a member of mumsnet before and left because I found people to be so judgemental. For example: Oh thats a nickname, they won't forgive you when you are older or it doesn't pass the high court judge test. Some names are branded as Chav, or will date. Popular names are a definite no go, with the majority of mumsnet slating them! I had hoped that the community may have become kinder.... BUT clearly my hopes were misplaced.

Indira is beautiful.

No need to be so rude about Ingrid - it’s one of my favourite names and was on my list.

I dislike Tiana and Indie.

EmilySpinach · 11/10/2020 15:56

You’re spoiling for a fight that no-one is bothered about having with you, OP.

MaryShelley1818 · 11/10/2020 15:58

OP your responses are way OTT to people just giving suggestions, no need to be so rude and there was nothing in your OP to suggest you wouldn't like certain names. Just chill out a bit.

I agree with others - Ingrid is gorgeous, very modern and Scandi sounding.

Out of your original names I'd go with Indy Matilda. Although I'm not a fan of nicknames instead of proper names. Do you particularly want a masculine name? I know of 2 Indy's (both boys).
Don't like Tiana at all, I work in a very deprived area in Children's Safeguarding and Disney names are very common amongst the families I work with. Not a judgement thing, just a pitfall of working with children!

MWNA · 11/10/2020 16:05

You've got a horrible manner, OP.
