I know this thread was done years ago but I'd like some fresh ideas of what people think of the name Alexandra-violet for a girl.. and what nicknames i could use? Should i double barrell or have violet as middle name...

Do you think i could get away with Zana as a nickname? As im not keen on Lexi and like alex but feel its not right for a baby girl xx

Oh gosh don’t hyphenate. Both beautiful names separately but not together.

redavocado · 12/10/2020 19:17

Please, please use Violet as a middle name instead of hyphenating them! I'm an Alexandra (but always Ali or Alex) and I find Alexandra is enough of a mouthful on its own.

Where does the sasha come from?

Zandra but tbh I'd just use full name!

Beautiful classic name (but I am biased!). My daughter is Alexandra to all her friends and has a plethora of diminutives at home. The ones she likes most are Aloushka and Alessia.

I am Alexandra Catherine born in the mid 80s and would love to know what you decided on and if you have had the happy event yet!

TatianaBis · 25/03/2021 17:00

Babies tend to get random nns unrelated to their name anyway such as Pookie, Noodle, Bobbin et. So I don't think you need to think up a nn based on her name in advance.

Ali, Sasha, Zsa, Zana are all nice.

Loathe Lexi personally.

IllNeverLetGoJack · 25/03/2021 17:05

I love Alexandra! I would probably call an Alexandra, Allie, which I think it lovely. I also like Alex and all the other options really, but not mad about Lexi. But, that is probably because I know two dreadful, adult Lexis.

I wouldn't hyphenate. It doesn't work well imo, as Alexandra has four syllables.

Thurlow · 25/03/2021 17:12

Our Alexandra is an Alex, though I do now wish I'd spelled it Alix instead

Sandra15 · 26/03/2021 00:38

I would swing for anyone who called me Lexie or Lexi.

toastofthetown · 26/03/2021 19:32

With a name like Alexandra the most popular nicknames in the UK are Alex and Lexi. So if you really don't like those names, I would avoid Alexandra because there is every chance that a nine-year-old Zana would come home from school one day and say that she wants to be called Alex. There are name Alexandras who go by other nicknames or no nickname, but I think that if you don't like the most intuitive nicknames then I would avoid the name. Zara works, but there is no guarantee it will stick. Depends on how tolerable the other nicknames are to you though.

I would have Violet as a middle name rather than hyphenated. I can't imagine anyone sticking with Alexandra-Violet as a full name, so I'd just drop the hyphen

DuchessOfSausage · 26/03/2021 20:29

Join the two names together without the hyphen. Alexandraviolet.
If that's a bit too short, try Alexandravioletta.
It will give endless possibilities for nicknames.

YoniAndGuy · 27/03/2021 12:09

Alexandra is nice, she'll almost certainly end up as Alex but if you like Alex for an older child that won't be an issue.

I don't like Violet but lots do!

Don't hyphenate - that would turn a nice classic name into a completely OTT sickly silly one.
