Would you struggle knowing how to pronounce this name? Or is it a non issue?

My understanding is it's pronounced 'tay-ah'
Please correct me if I'm wrong!
Thank you

In English é makes an ay sound like the a in same, it's not really putting a y in the sound, it's just the way you express it because we don't have accented vowels, we have dipthongs instead. You could express it as ae or a_e but this is less clear to most people than writing ay.

In French as I understand it's a sort of cross between the a in same and the e in egg.

CodenameVillanelle · 04/10/2020 07:45

@Grufallosfriends

Téa is pronounced Té-a (é like café)

It is NOT pronounced Tay-a!

In an English accent they are the same
BertieBotts · 04/10/2020 07:47

I don't think spelling it as Taya helps because that could be said to rhyme with Maya and is likely to get confused for Tanya. If the OP likes Téa then it's a step down to go with a spelling she likes less, it ought to provide significant improvements over the original in another area.

Just hope she doesn't fall in love with a Mr. Pott :)

CodenameVillanelle · 04/10/2020 07:48

@BatleyTownswomensGuild

I'd assume Tee-a

Frankly, unless you are French, I think putting an accent on the name is a bit daft and unnecessary....

If you didn't put an accent on she'd be called Tea!
SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 04/10/2020 07:48

Lovely name, but honestly the keyboard thing is an issue. She will be written as Tea always.

Lockdownfatigue · 04/10/2020 10:00

I know a Teyah. Less pronunciation issues. I have an é in my name and it totally gets missed.

Lockdownfatigue · 04/10/2020 10:02

It really will be written and pronounced Tea for evermore. People don’t see or understand the é, even when you’ve told them.

Frazzled2207 · 04/10/2020 10:07

I also thought Téa Leoni but she’s not as well known these days
@Grufallosfriends
Has a point
In English we might say caffay for café but in French the é is much shorter. No /y/sound, as pp said more like the /e/ in excellent
So would be Te- a not Tay-a but it is a subtle difference

Bienemayas · 04/10/2020 10:44

So Téa would be Te- a not Tay-a but it is a subtle difference

It's not that subtle actually. The é is pronounced like a long e sound. And there is no a or y sound.

BessMarvin · 04/10/2020 13:59

@BertieBotts

Don't overthink it, it's fine :) é is one of the easiest to do on a keyboard, surprised people don't know that if they went to secondary school after the 90s, that's where I learned to do it - Alt Gr + e.

I know a Tea short for Theresa who pronounces it Tee-a. I did not initially notice the accent in your post but Tay-a or Tee-a are both likely pronunciations and I wouldn't have a problem adjusting.

What is Gr?
PeachesTheFlamingo · 04/10/2020 16:24

Initially I would think "Tea/Tee", like the drink.

Then I'd have a guess at it being "Tee-ya".

BertieBotts · 04/10/2020 21:31

The key says Alt Gr on it, although on my forrin keyboard it's just the Alt to the right of the space bar.

TartanDMs · 04/10/2020 21:33

I knew a Téa - she was from Finland. She pronounced it Tee-a.

BessMarvin · 05/10/2020 22:01

I have just looked at my laptop and I have one alt and one alt Gr. I've never actually noticed! And I'm still no clearer. So I googled it and it's used for typing symbols and letters from languages other to where the keyboard is for. Or something like that
Anoisagusaris · 05/10/2020 22:17

That accent in Irish is called a fada, and I do find it hard to remember to type it in people’s names, even though I speak Irish and pronounce the fada.

I’d pronounce that name as Tee-a, based on Tea Leoni. But if I thought about it properly as a French name, I’d say Tay-a.

I can’t understand how a pp pronounces Taya the same as layer. They are so different in my accent.

BertieBotts · 06/10/2020 08:49

Yes, you hold Alt Gr and press e and it makes é

Also á í ó ú work, and if you press Alt Gr and 4 at the same time, it makes €.

Lockdownfatigue · 06/10/2020 13:18

They’re the same in my accent. Are you one of the accents that pronounce layer like lair?

Lockdownfatigue · 06/10/2020 13:24

é might be easy to do on a keyboard but the vast majority of people don’t see it or know how to pronounce it. I know because there’s one in my name.

Think Cléa mispronounced as Clee
Esté pronounced as Est
Hallé pronounced Hall.

I promise people never get it right. Even once told.

MissBattleaxe · 06/10/2020 13:39

I do freelance work for French clients and adding the e acute accent means going into word and "insert symbol" and then cutting and pasting it into my text. My French based clients have accents on their keyboards and UK keyboards don't. It's a pretty name but you'll be faffing about with accents if she's raised in the UK.

Sunflowers247 · 06/10/2020 14:13

I can’t understand how a pp pronounces Taya the same as layer.

Me neither!

Taya - Tay-AH

Layer - Lay-ER

And Téa is very different, as others have said. It's Té-a.

It's called a different accent.
emilybrontescorsett · 07/10/2020 23:02

Tea ah would be my initial thought.

len1234 · 08/10/2020 08:05

Would definitely think Tay-ah. Beautiful name!
