Would you struggle knowing how to pronounce this name? Or is it a non issue?

My understanding is it's pronounced 'tay-ah'
Please correct me if I'm wrong!
Thank you

I also say tay-ah.

VettiyaIruken · 02/10/2020 14:29

I'd assume it was tea-ah and short for Teresa or Dorothea or something.

AltoCation · 02/10/2020 14:30

My eyesight isn't very good so i would probably say 'tee'.

Ohalrightthen · 02/10/2020 14:30

It's pretty, but she'll spend her whole life with people calling her tea.

Pfeffel · 02/10/2020 14:31

Yes to tay-ah. Although that's thanks to Terry Pratchett's assassin Teatime, pronounced 'Teh-ah-tim-eh', which probably isn't the best association...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/10/2020 14:31

Honestly, i would say Tee-ah. (The accent over the E is likely to get lost at times).

BessMarvin · 02/10/2020 14:31

I'd think tee-a then wonder if it was tay-a

SoupDragon · 02/10/2020 14:33

I first thought "tea" but then I looked properly - I would say Taya

AltoCation · 02/10/2020 14:34

And it is very hard to type on a computer keyboard, not many people know how to do an e acute. It's OK on a phone though.

But why give you kid a name that is hard to type (assuming you are not in France?)

I am more used to it being spelt Thea.

But of course many people would not pronounce that the French way here.

indianaJames · 02/10/2020 14:34

Interesting feedback. Thank you!
Looks like it's a tricky name Sad

AltoCation very good point about keyboard

I wouldn't saddle my kid with a tricky name that's why I'm asking.

Yes, I'm of french heritage but I don't think that has much bearing. I don't think a name belongs to countries but I do appreciate its perhaps too hard outside France

Some alternatives might be Thea, Theodora, Tia, Althea.

unmarkedbythat · 02/10/2020 14:41

Wouldn't know, would look it up

neversayalways · 02/10/2020 14:43

I would not know how to pronounce it and so would go with 'tea' .

AltoCation · 02/10/2020 14:47

I agree that names don't belong to countries, but in France Thea would be pronounced with a T sound at the beginning, and in the UK with a TH sound.

Actually here it is generally pronounced Th-ee-ah, but in France Tay-a

AltoCation · 02/10/2020 14:48

Tala
Freya
Tia

Grufallosfriends · 02/10/2020 14:50

Téa is pronounced Té-a (é like café)

It is NOT pronounced Tay-a!

Chewbecca · 02/10/2020 14:51

I would be unsure.

BlusteryShowers · 02/10/2020 14:51

I would say Taya but agree about the accent getting missed. I would consider an alternative spelling if you've got your heart set on it.

Regularsizedrudy · 02/10/2020 14:52

You really want to call your baby tea? Because that’s what she’ll be recorded as on any system which doesn’t support é.

notso · 02/10/2020 14:55

When I first looked I thought Tia as in
Tia Maria.

If you like Taya why not call her that?

GreyishDays · 02/10/2020 14:56

@Grufallosfriends

Téa is pronounced Té-a (é like café)

It is NOT pronounced Tay-a!

Isn’t café pronounced

Caff-ay though?
So it’s Tay-a by that logic.

movingonup20 · 02/10/2020 14:57

Not all computer systems support accents in the U.K. because they aren't used in English. I wouldn't spell it Tea, I m on my phone and no accents are available! Thea is a lovely name

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 02/10/2020 15:02

I would say Tea like the drink. If it was spelt Thea I would say it like fe-a, with a th soft F sound

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/10/2020 15:04

It looks lovely. Accents are a PITA for lots of reasons though. Shame because I really like it.
