Hi!

I'm new on mumsnet and expecting a lovely baby girl for early 2021 :)

Currently hesitating between three names:

Margot
Isabella
Jemima

Which one is your favourite?

Our last name is easy to pair because very short (one syllable) and common (think Smith).

Thanks!

Margot Ross sounds lovely. Not at all harsh. Very elegant.

Bankingswitch · 01/10/2020 14:01

I think Jemima shortens nicely too - Jemma.

Margot could end up as Marge?

wishing3 · 01/10/2020 14:02

Isabella Ross makes me think of Isabella Rossellini too- so as they’re all lovely I’d go for one of the others.

Rae21 · 01/10/2020 14:03

Congratulations. I actually love all 3 but my favourite is Margot. But I actually don't like the spelling myself, if I was having a baby girl I use Margo and Margaux.

Theforest · 01/10/2020 14:04

Jemima

Lucile3555 · 01/10/2020 14:11

@WildCherryBlossom

Isabella Ross is a little too close to Isabella Rossellini.
Good point on Isabella Rossellini! I said it to my DH but he didn't know the actress :D

Margot

CeibaTree · 01/10/2020 14:41

Margot and Jemima are lovely. Isabella is ok, but a bit boring.

BurtonHouse · 01/10/2020 19:42

A woman with the name Margot Ross could be anything she wanted to be.

DramaAlpaca · 01/10/2020 20:04

I'd choose Jemima.

Isabella is lovely but very popular.

I can't stand Margot. I'm sorry, but I think it's ugly and very harsh looking written down, and quite hard sounding too even though the 't' is silent.

MarshaBradyo · 01/10/2020 20:05

Jemima (but not keen on Jem)

missmouse101 · 01/10/2020 20:12

Margot is terrible. It looks like maggot, sounds ugly and is very frumpy. Jemima is better.

Marlena1 · 01/10/2020 20:15

Isabella is so pretty

danascully96 · 01/10/2020 20:16

Isabella

Jemima in my country has different associations than in the UK; not a fan of Margot unfortunately

BridesmaidDilemma · 01/10/2020 20:17

I think Jemima. Jem is lovely as a nickname.

BridesmaidDilemma · 01/10/2020 20:18

Also Jemma. Not that common these last two decades!

footprintsintheslow · 01/10/2020 20:20

Margot

Margot Ross sounds absolutely fantastic! I love it. Margot is one of my favourite names. It’s a woman’s name, not a “cute” name that would only suit a little girl. It’s sophisticated and strong. I’d imagine Margot would be a well educated and travelled woman, who doesn’t take any nonsense, and is very cool and exciting. I’d like to be named Margot, or have her as a friend. The only negative for me is its growing popularity, which resulted in our taking it off our list, but this may not be an issue for you.

I’m afraid when I hear Jemima, I imagine a rather awkward, toothy, horse-loving public school girl. For some reason, in my head, her voice is like that of Guy of Gisbourne in that old children’s series, Maid Marion and Her Merry Men.

Isabella just sort of disappears due to the fact it is so popular, or similar to other popular names. I’m so used to hearing of girls named this sort of thing that I hardly even register any more.

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 01/10/2020 20:23

Definitely Margot. As a PP said, Isabella/Isabelle etc are very common (I had 4 in a class a few years ago)

Roowig2020 · 01/10/2020 20:25

I like Margot and it's quite cool at the minute because of the actress.
Isabella might be shortened to Bella or Izzy and I think both clash with your surname.
Jemima I don't like, sorry.

FOKKYFC · 01/10/2020 20:33

Margot is absolutely lovely. Just retro enough. 'Margot Ross' sounds like a woman who dies at 93, with a 47 year old husband and a 35 year old lover, having published seven novels, won thirteen Emmys and done all her own car maintenance. And drunk a lot of scotch.

RuthW · 01/10/2020 20:49

Jemima

ComicePear · 01/10/2020 20:50

Jemima

Jemima

I agree with PP, I want to be a Margot Ross when I grow up, she sounds like a fabulously stylish woman with stories that would make your hair curl. Downside is that it's a bit of a popular name
