Change my name?

Hi!
My name is Bryony, but spelt Briony, and I have absolutely no idea if I like it or not. Nobody ever spells it right, or pronounces it right either. I get called ‘Brie-an-ey’, ‘Britney’, ‘brainy’ and even my own grandparents spell my name wrong with extra A’s and E’s.

I probably don’t have the guts to change my name, but I’d love it if people could say their honest opinion about it. (Don’t worry I won’t be offended!) all my life people say ‘that’s unusual’ but never ‘that’s nice’, and perhaps that’s why I have a negative view on it.

I usually go by my nickname ‘Brie’, but then people associate that with ‘Brianna’ so the struggle continues.

Anyway, I’ll stop talking. Thank you :) Flowers

I know a Briony. I think it is a nice name.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/09/2020 19:59

Love it. I think that Bryony spelling would be easier for people to get the pronounciation.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/09/2020 20:01

I love your name.

I know a teen Briony - she gets called Brian and likes it (in the way teenage girls like to be “random”).

It’s a beautiful name. It’s one of those “unusual but not that quirky” names like Verity, Felicity.

There was a Briony on bake off a couple of years ago and she was a very lovely, warm character. Can only have boosted the general perception amongst your (potential) peers I’d have thought.

ChelseaCat · 29/09/2020 20:03

I like it 😊 I don’t know why people struggle with the pronunciation 🤷‍♀️

Mysa74 · 29/09/2020 20:06

I love it, was on my shortlist, albeit with the second y... My daughter looked more like a Verity when she arrived so I went with that.

Bh28 · 29/09/2020 20:51

Hahah yes! Throughout school my nickname was also ‘Brian’. Luckily I found the funny side. And yes I completely forgot about Briony from bake-off.

Oh I’m so jealous of your name it’s gorgeous.

Wigeon · 29/09/2020 23:05

I think it’s a perfectly nice name and I don’t have any difficulty pronouncing or spelling it! Assume it’s pronounced “Brian-ee”?

MercyBodle · 30/09/2020 00:16

Briony is a name I have long loved. I'm surprised (and sorry!) that people have so much trouble with it. I really like both spellings, but if you prefer the Bryony spelling you can change it of course.

If it makes you feel any better, I have the most common name of my decade, spelt and pronounced in the usual way, and I regularly have people misspelling and mispronouncing it, or asking me how to spell or pronounce it. Unbelievable! You would be staggered with how common and mainstream my name is!

I've always liked Briony. I don't think Bryony is any more intuitive really. I have a friend whose name is spelt Brionie.

I say own it! It's a lovely name.

Waitingforamate · 30/09/2020 07:17

Briony is beautiful, I know someone with this spelling so it looks right to me.
Don’t change it, own it! :)

BikeRunSki · 30/09/2020 07:20

It’s lovely name, with a completely phonetic spelling!

India999 · 30/09/2020 07:26

Are you in the UK? I feel like that's not unusual at all!! Bryony is a nice name.

India999 · 30/09/2020 07:27

Sorry, I just totally spelt it wrong like you said. It's too early 😆
