Hi? Just found out our second baby is a girl and I’ve always loved the name Matilda but my DH name is Matthew (normally matt) Can we use Matilda, non Tilda or Tilly or is it too similar?
Thanks

Congratulations! Matilda is a lovely name, so don't see why not?

duckoutofwater · 29/09/2020 19:27

Not sure I would, unless you are planning to use the nickname most of the time

emmathedilemma · 29/09/2020 19:28

Two Matty’s or Matt and matty unless you’re very strict about sticking to Tilly. Please don’t call a child Tilda unless want rice jokes!

RedRumTheHorse · 29/09/2020 19:30

Yep you can call her Matilda the she can be called 'Tilly" as a nickname.

Ohalrightthen · 29/09/2020 19:34

Ahhhhh v jealous, Matilda is both of our favourite names but couldn't use it for DD - DH is Matt and I'm Millie, couldn't have Matt and Mattie, or Millie and Tilly, so it was a no go. If one of us had been called something else, we'd have gone for it.

daisypond · 29/09/2020 19:41

I think it’s OK. It might be different if they were sibling names, but I think it’s fine for father/daughter.

GunsAndShips · 29/09/2020 19:43

I have a 13yo Tilda (full name Mathilda) and nobody has ever made a rice joke. Not once. I just asked her and she looked blankly at me.

Ghosts2020 · 30/09/2020 00:36

Matilda (which is spelt the wrong way) is so overused

TigerQuoll · 30/09/2020 02:24

Why not, my niece is Matilda nn Tilly and her grandfather is Matt.

MercyBodle · 30/09/2020 04:22

I don't see why you can't use it. Similar, but not the same.

Firebird83 · 30/09/2020 08:23

I think it’s fine

Canklesforankles · 30/09/2020 08:26

Tilda is lovely as a nick name. Not many Matilda’s are called Matty so I think you’ll be fine.

itsjakeandamy · 30/09/2020 09:34

I think it's fine.
(I also love Tilda).

We have a Tilda too, and have never had a rice joke. Apart from bemused smiley faces when I took a photo of her next to the Tilda rices in Asda when she was in the sling as a newborn.

She’s named after Tilda Swinton.

MikeUniformMike · 30/09/2020 10:41

Yes, of course you can.

Littleverz · 02/10/2020 13:25

Thanks everyone! Happy to see the majority think it’s fine & not to similar

I think you can use Matilda. I like Millie as a nickname (prefer Millie or Milly to Tilly/ie or Tilda).

Tillygetsit · 02/10/2020 22:31

Of course you can!
