The title says it really. EE-VO or EYE-VO? EE-VAN or EYE-VAN?

sibbys · 29/09/2020 10:51

Eve-o

Eve-ahn

mynameiscalypso · 29/09/2020 10:53

Two eyes here too.

FourPlasticRings · 29/09/2020 10:54

Eye-vo and eye-van. If I were going for another pronunciation it'd be i-vo and i-van with the short i sound, rather than 'ee'.

MargotsBumpyNight · 29/09/2020 10:54

Eve-oh
Eye-van

MJMG2015 · 29/09/2020 10:55

Eye vo. Eve van

emptyplinth · 29/09/2020 10:57

Eve-oh and Eye-van

TheVanguardSix · 29/09/2020 10:58

Ee-vo
Eye-van (in this country). Ee-van in Europe.

I also love Ivor.

user1493494961 · 29/09/2020 10:59

Eye for both.

NoSquirrels · 29/09/2020 11:00

Eye-vo and Eye-van

MikeUniformMike · 29/09/2020 11:06

Eev-o and Eye-van.

DoctorYang · 29/09/2020 11:10

Eye vo and Eye van.

unmarkedbythat · 29/09/2020 11:13

Depends how they were introduced to me, which language the family used, etc. Instinctively I'd guess EYE-vo and EYE-van if I saw it written down with no context, but I'd be prepared to be totally wrong.

ttcAlex · 29/09/2020 11:14

Thank you for your opinions so far Flowers

If you came across an Ivan, who pronounced his name as E-van, not Eye-van, would you find it odd/think his name is spelled wrong?

OP posts:
ttcAlex · 29/09/2020 11:16

Sorry by E-van, I meant I-van with the short i-sound.

FelicityPike · 29/09/2020 11:17

No, I would think he was maybe Russian or Polish or suchlike.

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/09/2020 11:17

Eye vo

Eye van

I'd never think someone was spelling their name wrong, lots of local variations in pronunciation. I may occasionally think someone's parents made their life harder than needed though.

Kanaloa · 29/09/2020 11:18

Yes eye-vo & eye-van. I believe Russian people pronounce it ee-van so if I met one pronounced like that I would presume he was from Russian heritage probably.

CaptainInsensible · 29/09/2020 11:19

No, as pp has said, I would assume it was pronounced in the Russian way. Ivan Lendl is an example, although I don’t think he was Russian, maybe Bulgarian?

happylittlechick · 29/09/2020 11:20

I go eye for both two. I wouldn't know how you could spell it to make the pronunciation clear. I think he would be constantly correcting people's pronunciation. I also think he'll have to spell it out.

EIRA3 · 29/09/2020 11:26

We would say E-van for ivan around my area of wales - means John in English.
I love the name, considering it for DC4

LaTomatina · 29/09/2020 11:27

In the UK, I would assume it's pronounced Eye Van because the letter I is eye there. In most European countries (if not all?) I is always Ee. So if not from the UK, I would assume Ee- van.

It could never be eye-van in a Slavic country, because eye-van sounds almost identical to hajvan, which means to behave like an animal, so not a great association...
