The title says it really. EE-VO or EYE-VO? EE-VAN or EYE-VAN?

Forgot to say I would spell it ifan, as there's no v in the welsh alphabet. If that makes sense.

TeacupDrama · 29/09/2020 11:30

Ivan Lendl is pronounced ee van

Lockdownfatigue · 29/09/2020 11:31

Welsh Ifan would be pn ee-van and Ifor ‘ee-vor’

English Ivan = eye-van and Ivo = eye-vo, Ivor = eye-vor etc. Letter I doesn’t make that sound in English.

florascotia2 · 29/09/2020 11:34

FWIW, Ivan Lendl (EE-van) was born in Czech Republic but now lives in the USA, I believe.

Bikingbear · 29/09/2020 11:37

Ivan Eye-van and Ivo Eye-vo as in Ivor the Engine - might need to be a certain age to get that.

I would also think they would be the same beginning as Ivy the plant.

steppemum · 29/09/2020 11:37

Eye-vo & Eye-van

But if told it was i-van or ee-van, I would just assume eatern european or something and pronounce as told. But i think the standard go to is eye-van, so teachers on registers etc, you have to tell them it is not that.
Oh, Welsh has a shorter I saound, but different to eg Polish too doesn't it?

Shouldn't be a problem, alternative pronunciations are pretty common

well except in the name Isobel....
MikeUniformMike · 29/09/2020 11:57

Welsh Ifan is pronounced more like Yvan - the i is more like the i in if or big. Ifor is more like Yvor (Yv like in Yvonne). the o in Ifor is like the o in of.

Ivan is Eye-vun or Y-vahn.
Ivo is Eev-o or Eye-vo.

emmathedilemma · 29/09/2020 11:58

Isobel isn't a Welsh name.

Ifan/Ivan is (the latter version being used to compensate for mispronunciation of the 'f' sound).

I'd pronounce Ee-vo or Ee-van.

RuthW · 29/09/2020 12:16

How about if you saw Yvan, how would you pronounce that?
(thank you to the poster above, who suggested this variation of the name)

@CaptainInsensible

No, as pp has said, I would assume it was pronounced in the Russian way. Ivan Lendl is an example, although I don’t think he was Russian, maybe Bulgarian?
^This.

People would automatically pronounce it as the famous person they know with that name.

Oh and Ivan Lendl is nice to fans.

MikeUniformMike · 29/09/2020 13:03

Yvan is breton and is pronounced pretty much the same as Ifan.

Lisa78Lemon · 29/09/2020 13:11

Eye-van as I knew one in uni

Isobel isn't a Welsh name.

the quote was that in English the I doesn't mkae a short I sound. (whereas in Welsh it does)

In the name Isobel it does. The point was that Isobel is not Welsh, it is English.
