Shortening Alfred to Fred?

So I understand the most common diminutive is Alfie, but can you have Fred too? I don’t mind Alfie but definitely prefer the latter, I think it’s cute for a little toddler whereas still being a bit more age appropriate for an adult. If it’s relevant, our other boy is Vincent who is Vince (sometimes just Vin) for short

Yes. Alfred can be shortened to Fred.

I love Alfred NN Fred!
Such a cool choice. x

Alfred can be Fred and I also prefer Fred to Alfie. He might want to change to Alfie as he grows up , but as you don't mind Alfie it shouldn't be a problem.

Same as toast. Alfie is one of those names that is cute if there is just one, but it's a bit too popular and has just merged into all the Archies and Albies.

monkeyonthetable · 27/09/2020 11:09

Yes, it's fine and such a lovely name.

MJMG2015 · 27/09/2020 11:10

Of course you can. Just introduce him as Fred & call him Fred. Job done.

Lavendersy · 27/09/2020 11:44

When I say Alfred, the emphasis is on ALF so the natural shortening would be Alf or Alfie. Alfred isn't much longer anyway.

Fred sounds short for Frederick imo.

Lavendersy · 27/09/2020 11:45

I like Vincent.

Palavah · 27/09/2020 11:47

Of course you can. You could use Frederick if you prefer.

Grufallosfriends · 27/09/2020 11:50

Frederick naturally shortens to Fred.

Alfred is Alf or Alfie.

CountessFrog · 27/09/2020 11:52

That’s gorgeous!

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2020 11:53

Most of the Freds I know are Wilfred.
One of the Fredricks I know is Rick.
Of course Alfred can abbreviate to Fred.

Ashdownstar · 27/09/2020 12:00

Honestly, you can call him anything you like. A nickname is just that. I can't see anything wrong in shortening Alfred to Fred anyway.
None of my children's nicknames had anything to do with their actual names.
One of them has changed what they are known as in adulthood (think Elizabeth, always called Liz, now Beth)

Quizeerascal · 27/09/2020 12:51

Yep fine to call him Fred, I also think that Alf would be a cool nn for a teenage/adult Alfred 🙂

Jaimeles · 27/09/2020 13:38

Sounds good to me. You could also use Freddy ( find it a bit more baby appropriate).

monkeyonthetable · 27/09/2020 16:34

I love all the diminutives of the name Alfred: Alf, Alfie, Fred, Freddie. Alfie is overused these days but the name Alfred is a classic.
