Otis or Roman?

Sandcastles55 · 26/09/2020 20:29

We were set on Otis but I’ve since heard of a newborn Otis and I’m sure it’s about to boom in popularity. I really like Roman and don’t know of any at all, though I keep reading that it’s very popular (is it?!).

Also like Otto and Remy but not to the same extent as Otis and Roman..any thoughts on these names or their popularity?

Yeah Roman is extremely popular in its own right, I think it was the fastest rising boy name the last couple of years. Has risen 600 places in the charts recently. It has also got very popular at the same time as other very very similar sounding names like Rowan and so on so feels even more popular than it actually is. Looking at the graph of Roman's growth I guess it will be top 30 in the next year or two.
Otis is also increasing in popularity but has no where near the numbers of Roman/Rowan yet. Otis won't touch the top 100 for a while but could well get there at some point.

Out of the two I'd definitely pick Otis especially if you're concerned about popularity.

Roman is pretty much the last name you should pick if popularity is a concern.

I love the name Roman and don't know of any in my DCs school or nursery although know of 3 Otis'

FluffyEggsontoast · 26/09/2020 20:41

That's interesting @JohnnyJohnnyYesMama
That totally goes against the statistics!

Roman is a lot higher that Otis in the charts. Plus there's a load of similar 'Ro' names to Roman in the top 100 (Ronnie, Rowan, Rory and so on)

Have you used the "dark greener" website @Sandcastles55 - I think you should have a look there now and see for yourself.

If you're main concern is popularity I'd definitely avoid Roman obviously but I'd maybe consider avoiding Otis too (Otis is a lovely name though, Roman is ok but I find a bit OK! Mag/towie )

Otis

motherofdxughters · 26/09/2020 20:57

Otis.

Sandcastles55 · 26/09/2020 21:06

That’s interesting @JohnnyJohnnyYesMama. I also haven’t heard of any Romans or Rohan’s (under the age of 15). We live in a very big city and have done all the usual NCT, baby classes etc with our first, so thought I would have come across at least one

Otis.

It’s not even that Roman is popular it’s that it’s rising incredibly fast so within a few years we will probably all know of a number of them.

The one baby Roman I know is the son of a teacher and I bet she picked the name because she’d never taught one / the name hadn’t been ruined for her yet .. but that’ll be because she’s seeing names 11+ years after the trend.

Anyway, Otis is the nicer name.

anxietrist · 26/09/2020 21:17

Otis!

GertiMJN · 26/09/2020 21:17

Otis over Roman any day.

Viviennemary · 26/09/2020 21:18

Both of them are equally dire. Otto is better.

MikeUniformMike · 26/09/2020 21:31

Don't like either of them or Otto.

Rowan is much nicer than Roman.

That you don't know of any doesn't mean that there won't be several in his age-group.

DramaAlpaca · 26/09/2020 21:33

I prefer Otis to Roman.

peachypetite · 26/09/2020 21:44

Otis

Whatsyourflava · 26/09/2020 21:53

Otis is a great choice
In 2019 there was nearly 1,200 Romans born in England and Wales compared to only 450 Otis'.
So well over double the number of Roman's than Otis'. we're inundated with Roman's round here. If you were to include all the Roman, Rowan, Rohan's and so on there were over 3,000 babies with those names in 2019
Otis is nicer and also more unusual looking at the official statistics, so I think you're overthinking. Stick with Otis

Tillygetsit · 26/09/2020 22:39

Otis is much better than Roman. I do like Rowan though.

Kanaloa · 26/09/2020 23:18

I think Roman is nicer than Otis, and Otto is nice as well.

Firebird83 · 27/09/2020 00:15

Otis

timothytoes · 27/09/2020 00:28

Roman

Cado12 · 27/09/2020 00:40

I much prefer Roman despite its growing popularity along with Rowan & Ronan.
Otis reminds me of an aardvark!

Ghosts2020 · 27/09/2020 01:22

Otis would be less popular than roman, but out of all four I love remy

Enrosadira · 27/09/2020 01:45

Def not Otis.

Harrysmum2020 · 27/09/2020 01:59

Love roman definitely on my list for next one

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/09/2020 02:02

Roman is a (Polish) family name for me so not a 'new' phenomenon. The one in my family died decades ago! I like it but for personal reasons.

Flymetothestars · 28/09/2020 09:08

If popularity is any kind of factor to you then Roman is one of the main names to avoid.
Roman, Arlo, Ezra, Theo..

All fastest rising names- avoid. Roman in particular has come from literally nowhere (uncharted) to be in the top 50 and it'll be top 30 soon looking at the graphs and the pace of growth. Plus theres the additional factor of the rising popularity of extremely similar sounding names.

I had never met a Roman at all until about 2 years ago and now I come across them everywhere. 2 in my Nct group of 7 babies. Lots of Rohan, Rowan, Reuben. All nice names but blend into one now.

Seen as the official statistics show there were nearly 3 times as many Roman's as there were Otis' in 2019 so I think you should stick with Otis or pick another name completely that isn't rising in popularity.

MercyBodle · 28/09/2020 11:52

Definitely Otis.

I would be avoiding Roman if popularity matters to you.
