We are approaching our 20 week scan and intend to find out gender of baby. Boys name is all sorted but we are completely stuck with girls names. We would like to decide on a name before the 20 week scan as we did with our first child, Noah.

Current Shortlist:

Isabel Matilda
Isla Matilda
Heidi Matilda
Jemima

Would ideally like middle name to be Matilda (this is a very meaningful name to us), but obviously can't have Matilda if we chose Jemima. But we really quite like that Jemima is slightly more unusual. Concerned about the two 'a' endings in Isla Matilda. Does it sound silly?

Which is your favourite of our shortlist? And why? Any other names you can recommend that would go well with Matilda.

Matilda is a beautiful middle name. Agree Jemima Matilda is a bit of a mouthful. We like traditional names such as Emily and Alice. They could go with Matilda?

Robs20 · 14/09/2020 20:58

We have very similar taste in names! Jemima, Heidi and Matilda were in my top 5. Isla Matilda is a bit of a mouthful, but ok. How about Jemima Rose, Jemima Annabelle or Jemima Poppy?

EhUp · 14/09/2020 20:59

I would avoid Isla Matilda as agree that it doesn't flow well with the 2 A endings (and same with Jemima)

Personally I would choose Heidi above Isabel purely due to the fact that Isabel/Isobel/Isabelle/Isabella has been so popular for past 20 years or so

Other suggestions
Phoebe Matilda
Jasmine Matilda

I love Isla Matilda, I also love Jemima.

How about two middle names with Jemima - Jemima Claire Matilda for example?

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 14/09/2020 21:00

I like Heidi Matilda.

Heidi is a fab name full stop, and I think the other options are slight mouthfuls.

Auto · 14/09/2020 21:01

I like Isabel Matilda best. I also like Jemima but it doesn't flow as well with Matilda.

Annabel Matilda
Imogen Matilda
Lucy Matilda
Josephine (Josie) Matilda
Coralie Matilda
Harriet Matilda
Frances Matilda
Juliet Matilda

anonymous1989 · 14/09/2020 21:02

@kittenpeak Unfortunately Emily is the named of someone close to me, so not really usable. I have a very strange relationship with Alice. I want to love it, but all I see is A-Lice or Alice the Camel has 5 humps etc etc (as I used to frequently sing at Brownies in my childhood 😂. I just think these associations are too strong to use it!

I really like Isla Matilda, I think it rolls really nicely. It’s my favourite.

anonymous1989 · 14/09/2020 21:05

@Auto Thank You. Juliet was on the shortlist before, but a little worried about the "Where's Romeo?" teasing.

Delilah Matilda
Primrose Matilda
Juniper Matilda

itsjakeandamy · 14/09/2020 21:37

How about Jemima Tilda? It sounds fine having 2 -a endings but it's the Ma ma together that doesn't work with Jemima Matilda (imo). They are lovely names.
Isla Matilda would be my second choice.

Jemima is my favourite
Great choice

anonymous1989 · 14/09/2020 23:33

Wow! Such a range of people who like each of my options for various reasons! How will I ever decide.
I think currently Jemima is my favourite. But I'm struggling for a middle name, as I cant use Matilda.
Isabel/Isla Matilda are jointly second favourite. Heidi has been on and off the list more times than I can count, so maybe thats a sign that its not quite right.

A one syllable middle name goes best with Jemima so:

Belle
Eve
Grace
Hope
Kate
May/Mae
Pearl
Rae
Rose
Skye

Let us know what you choose! Good luck!

wishing3 · 15/09/2020 00:24

All lovely names but not so keen on Isla Matilda as a combo. The double a endings make it sound a bit like a Spanish island. But probably just me!

MercyBodle · 15/09/2020 01:59

From your list I love Jemima and like Isabel. I don't like Heidi, and Isla is okay but over-used. Isla Matilda works fine though I think.
Middles for Jemima:
Jemima Daisy
Jemima Poppy
Jemima Lucy
Jemima Holly
Jemima Frances

CatRamsey · 15/09/2020 02:06

Oh Heidi Matilda is fantastic!!

MercyBodle · 15/09/2020 02:31

Just to add, you could use Jemima Tilly as Matilda doesn't work with Jemima.

Kote · 15/09/2020 03:33

Of your list Isabel and Heidi both work well. The others not so much.

Some other suggestions:
Florence Matilda
Sophie Matilda
Ivy Matilda
Phoebe Matilda

WinWinnieTheWay · 15/09/2020 03:35

Jemima Isobel

mathanxiety · 15/09/2020 04:20

I don't think there's a problem with the two A endings of Isla Matilda. I think the names flow beautifully.

They work because the flow is 'two syllable' - 'three syllable'.

By contrast, Isla Sarah wouldn't flow well.

Isla Matilda is my favourite from your list.

Other than Isla Matilda, I love Jemima, but the two -ma syllables would run together in an unfortunate way if Matilda was the middle name.

I think you could place a very long second name, followed by Matilda as a second middle name.

Jemima Elizabeth Matilda
Jemima Catalina Matilda
Jemima Leonora Matilda

Update....We have so far:

9 Votes for Jemima with suggestions of Jemima Tilda or Jemima Tilly.

5 Votes for Isabel Matilda (Isabel is a little awkward with the surname but not too bad).

5 Votes for Heidi Matilda

5 Votes for Isla Matilda

Although Jemima is way out front, the rest are all tied. I do like Jemima, I'm just not sure I want to forgo using Matilda as a middle name. Two middle names isn't an option for us as our son had a short first and middle name (4 letters then 5 letters).

My husband threw Chloe Matilda into the mix today...... I'm not sure if Chloe is a bit "90s" and not in a good way! Has Chloe had its day?

I have an Isabel so I'm biased, I love Isabel matilda. I also really like Jemima, it's what my mum wanted to call me, instead my name is 1 letter different!! 😂 😂 I don't like isla I'm afraid and have no strong opinion on Heidi. If you went with Jemima what middle name would you have?

anonymous1989 · 15/09/2020 10:26

@Flappingflamingo We are not sure on a middle name for Jemima. That is part of the problem. We had our hearts set on Matilda for the middle name. Its so hard! Boys names have been so much easier!
