We’re not having a baby but I figured you all could help solve this debate between me and dh:-

Marcia:-

Mar see a or
Marsha?

Or can it be both?

I think Marsha is more common for the US,in the U.K. mar see ah is more common

moonfacebaby · 13/09/2020 19:11

It’s my name - it’s pronounced Mar-see-ah.

Never been called Marsha (in the UK so I don’t think people do try to call you that here)

ktp100 · 13/09/2020 19:15

Marsha

Onceuponatimethen · 13/09/2020 19:17

I pronounce Mar - see - uh

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 13/09/2020 19:18

I know a Mar-shya. So both of your options together really.

tiredanddangerous · 13/09/2020 19:19

The one I know is Marsha. It can be pronounced either way.

OverTheRainbow88 · 13/09/2020 19:20

Mar CHEE A

Talisin · 13/09/2020 19:31

It’s generally Mar-See-Ah in the UK and Marsha in the US.

Lavenderblues · 13/09/2020 20:38

Marcia and Tricia both pronounced Marsha and Trisha. In English.

HeronLanyon · 13/09/2020 20:50

Good friend called Marcia - mar - cee - ah - here in U.K.

Just checked - ‘vanishingly rare’ for her to be called Marsha here. This sometimes happens in US.

Frazzled2207 · 13/09/2020 21:48

Although most of us agree that it's usually mar-see-ah there is a whole other discussion about where the emphasis is

MAR - see - ah
or
Mar - SEE - ah
I think the second but would think the first is possible too and probably more common than Marsha.

ChicCroissant · 13/09/2020 21:50

Mar-see-ah

FishPalace · 13/09/2020 21:54

@Scarby9

Either. Like Alicia - I am always being caught out by the Ali- see - a versus the Alisha pronunciations.
Exactly this. My sense is that in both cases the ‘ee-a’ pronunciation is UK and the ‘sha’ US?
Onceuponatimethen · 13/09/2020 22:03

MAR-see-uh

Falcone · 13/09/2020 22:10

I know someone called Marcia and its pronounced Mar-sha

RuthW · 13/09/2020 22:21

Mar-see-a

TheDaydreamBelievers · 13/09/2020 22:59

Mahr-see-ah (West of Scotland, UK)

DramaAlpaca · 13/09/2020 23:03

Both are correct, in the same way there are a couple of ways of pronouncing Alicia.

I've met women with both pronunciations.

Auto · 13/09/2020 23:26

MAR see a.

Marsha sounds like a lazy pronunciation.

PetraRabbit · 13/09/2020 23:44

I know one, a very old lady and she is Marr-see-a, emphasis on first syllable. Great name.

AlwaysLatte · 14/09/2020 00:01

Mar-see-ah. I wouldn't expect to pronounce it Marsha unless it was spelled Marsha.

Ellmau · 14/09/2020 00:03

I think it can be both. I vaguely associate the MARSHA pronunciation as American.

MercyBodle · 14/09/2020 01:31

It can be pronounced either way, and as pps have said, I think that is largely regional. If you use it, you need to choose your preferred pronunciation, and be prepared to correct people who use (and they will) the other one.

ButterflyRuns · 14/09/2020 01:56

I said Mar-see-a, much nicer

Nyclair · 14/09/2020 02:05

Mar cee a.
